WSW Open Hill Climb

For the first time since 1996, the West Suffolk Wheelers promoted an open Hill Climb time trial. This is one of the most specialised types of cycle racing, requiring the riders to be able to start fast, maintain this speed for 2 minutes before sprinting for the finish line. The bikes used are lightweight, specialist machines and gear choice and tactics can win or lose an event.

With the sun out and a tail wind up the climb, conditions couldn?t have been better for a good event and fast times. Although narrowly missing out on the overall prize, home club rider Richard Farrow smashed the WSW record for the hill by over 6 seconds, coming home in 1m 48.49s for second place. Now once again established on the calendar, the organiser is already looking forward to next year?s event, hoping for larger fields and more excellent racing.

About the West Suffolk Wheelers
  • The West Suffolk Wheelers cycling club was formed in 1922 and is based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We have a good cross-section of cycling on offer to welcome new and experienced cyclists alike. If you wish to learn bike handling skills for on and/or off-road cycling our members have the knowledge and experience to teach you. The Club is proud of it's development work with young people, and we have coaches to guide new cyclists in their training. We are active in all areas of cycling including: Road Racing, Time Trials, Track Racing, Club Runs,Touring, Audax, Sportive, Mountain Biking and Cyclo-cross. Members also compete in triathlon competitions; the Club is recently affiliated to Triathlon England, and new triathlete members are welcomed
