Teesdale May 2010

Only the brave or mountain goats need apply!

Five days spent cycling in Teesdale and Weardale before attempting to climb the Wrynose and Hardknott passes near Ambleside, Cumbria. Managed the 25-30% Wrynose but with 5 stops for heart to retreat inside ribcage. Gave up on 30% Hardknott Pass as judged this was a 20-stop climb for me and thus I was not worthy. Plus a heavy Lakeland shower came down, the sort that stair rods are made of, hence no photos of the climb at all. That made my mind up and I turned down the beautiful Duddon Valley not at all downhearted. I only know of Mike Bowen in the Wheelers who has managed Hardknott Pass, which is judged by others as in the top ten hardest climbs in the UK, as is the Wrynose Pass. I don't claim to have cycled up the Wrynose as I had to stop several times, so am not worthy of that either! My lowest gear was 30 x 28 and not low enough for me quite obviously. The challenge is to cycle both of these Passes witout stopping on either climb at all. Only the brave need apply! Enjoy!
