Colchester Cyclo Cross Report

The fifth round of the EADT sponsored Eastern Cross League took place at Colchester’s Hillyfields venue on Sunday, and the sunny weather delighted the six competitors from West Suffolk, on a very enjoyable course, including tricky woods, ascents ,descents and heathy grassland.

First race was the Vets and Ladies, a 40 minute race, with 50 of the 68 starters allocated starting grid positions according to previous form. Mike Bowen started steadily but worked his way through the field for an excellent 20th place, whilst Barry Denny started well but was unable to hold his place and dropped to 36th. Soren Sjolin was riding his brand new Cube cross bike, after previously borrowing Adi Grimwood’s, keeping upright this week and in an improved 56th place.

Next up was the Under 12’s on a shortened course, and Alexandra Sjolin made her league debut with an excellent 18th from 29 starters.

Under16’s next and Alan Trolove made his trade mark start, literally sprinting way from the field and challenging the others to stay with him. Sean Dunlea, who won last week in Alan’s absence, made a valiant attempt but gradually dropped back, and that’s the way the stayed for the 30 minute duration, whilst Jonathan Sjolin was riding strongly up into 8th place, and thereby continuing his excellent progress in just three meetings.

Last race of the day was the Juniors, Seniors and Elite Vets, which was another win for Hugo Robinson in his first year as a Junior, having dominated the U16’s last year.

In three weeks time the League comes to Redgrave, near Diss on Saturday November 6th ~ who fancies joining in the fun, or at least come to see what it’s like?
