On what turned out to be a pleasant November day forty eight riders tackled our ‘Roads and Tracks’ event on November 15. Starting and finishing at Denny Bros factory and with a choice of 20 or 35 mile routes, the event was non-competitive, but nevertheless a ‘race’ for some, and with an optional timed test that the majority decided to have a go at.
The home club accounted for 13 of the entries including four youngsters, with contingents from other local clubs, notably Mildenhall, Norwich and Stowmarket, and with unattached riders from Clacton, Colchester and various Norfolk towns.
The route took riders through Rougham, Barton, Livermere, Ixworth, Honington, Ampton and Fornham by a mixture of minor roads, bridleways and byways and some fairly formidable muddy sections, notably near the pig farm up at Rymer Barn. Most riders coped OK with the navigation, aided by direction arrows at all important junctions, but Richard Stiff, who was at one point four minutes ahead of the field, took a wrong turn, punctured and eventually came in 15 minutes down! There were also those that wanted to take in more steadily, and they enjoyed it too, and got equally as muddy!
Thanks to all the club stalwarts who helped run the event, including Richard 'Tom Tom' Seggar, Richard and Robin Lines, Geoff Byne and Margaret Byne, Don and Brenda Picking, Neville Pettitt, Peter Heath, Tony Panting, Stephen and Polly Hill, Ron Fisher and not forgetting Helen and Hannah Ballam who did a great job on the registration desk!
