The Eastern Region Divisional Championships

The Eastern Region Divisional Championships was run on the Risby circuit, promoted by the West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club. Between the start at a few minutes past nine to the finish at around twelve forty five a brisk South-Westerly wind increased in speed to over twenty miles an hour, making for three and three quarter hours of very hard work indeed. Grovelling at 20mph between Lackford and Cavenham then flying at over 40mph from Risby to Flempton.

At two points on the course, the crosswind was blowing a reddish-beige dust storm across the road. The most dramatic was experienced on the high ground before descending to Flempton. At one point, in the mirror of my 2nd Lead car the group of four who were battling to bridge to the leading break almost completely disappeared from view. Later, the unfortunate riders behind me almost disappeared as my car began to destroy its engine in a cloud of steam and smoke (for those who care, I was able to drive carefully home). The leading group of four managed to stay away from their attack on the third lap all the way to the line, at one point swelling to eight, then dwindling to five. There was only one point when it seemed the bunch was closing – but they were being towed by the four eventually split off the front to join the leaders.

Sole WSW&Tri rider David Miller did well (as a 3rd Cat) to finish with bunch. Well done!
