Medals for Wheelers at Track Nationals

Our own track super-hero Ross Edgar was disappointed with his performance in the Sprint event at the Nationals last week, finishing outside the medals in fifth, with young Jason Kenny beating all the better established riders. But he won gold in the Team Sprint, although not competing in the final, but doing his bit in the qualifying rounds. But it was in the Keirin (the event in which he won Olympic Silver) that Ross showed his real class, coming from through with a devastating burst of speed in the final yards to claim the gold ahead of Kenny, who was the pre-event favourite on his current form.

But our newest track rider Donna Williams was there too, finishing 14th in the 500m time trial and 6th in the team sprint with her Team Terminator partner Louise Satherley. But the Team Terminator leader Dave Le Grys entered his girls in the Team Pursuit. With only one serious training session behind them he teamed up sprinters Louise and Donna with endurance rider Estelle Rogers for a shot at the 3000m Team Pursuit event, in which there were only four entries. Against all the odds they qualified third fastest, with Donna admitting to ‘hanging on for grim death’. They held this position in the run-off to gain the bronze medal, with Donna coming through on the last lap to improve their time to 3:58, against a 4:01 in qualifying.

So that’s two National medals for Donna in her very first season. Watch this space!
