West Suffolk do well at Mildenhall Rally
As a club we did very well at the Mildenhall Rally over the Bank Holiday weekend. There was a sizeable group of our riders on the Audaxes on Saturday, too many to list, but notable amongst which were Jonathan Howe and Peter Stephenson-Wall who did the 300k version ~ that’s over 200 miles in real money!
We ran the Go Ride activities again this year and had over 50 youngsters participating, with very complimentary comments from many parents, and a significant income ~ well done to Family Ballam, Don and Brenda Picking, Geoff Byne and Neville Pettitt who did the work.
Our young riders then did us credit in the Youth Grass Track events. Ed Ballam and Jonathan Sjolin came first and second in the U14 omnium and Alan Trolove won the U16, each age group comprising talented riders from all over the country, and included national medallists. In the freewheel group Alexandra Sjolin also rode well, as she did on Monday, coming third overall in the U12 cyclo-cross and first girl.
And on Saturday night we had success of a different kind at the Cycle Jumble. Members had generously donated a van full of old cycling stuff to sell in aid of club funds. We had wheels, pedals, crank sets, frames, forks, riding kit and even two or three complete bikes. Sales went well from the very beginning and we had a very hectic two hours. When all the dust had settled we counted over £800 in the till, about double what we had expected to make! Thanks to all those members who responded to our call ~ the money will help to kit out the clubroom.
