Go Ride

Go-Ride

Go-Ride is British Cycling’s programme for teaching children the skills & techniques needed to be safe rider. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills.

West Suffolk Wheelers provide outdoor Go-Ride sessions in the summer months and indoor training during the winter.

Go-Ride Outdoor Sessions

  • When: Every Tuesday 6.30 - 7.30pm in term time (from April to July).
  • Where: Wheelers HQ in the grounds of Priory school (Shakers Lane entrance), Bury St Edmunds IP32 7BH.
  • Who: Sessions are suitable for riders aged 6 and over, (younger riders may be able to take part at discretion of coaches). Level of riding skill does not matter.
  • What: Riders need to bring a working bike & wear a helmet. Clothing needs to be suitable for the weather & cycling. Drinks may be brought to session.
  • More info: Helen Ballam ballam@sky.com (01284 706522)

Sessions are held in a traffic free environment run by qualified cycling coaches. Children work in groups on a skill & gradually build these up to use in race / ride situation. Each child works to their own level.

Parents/guardians will be asked to complete registration form & consent. Please let us know of any health issues we need to be aware of.

Sessions are free to family members of West Suffolk Wheelers & Tri club. Non-members are charged £3 per week for the first 5 sessions (£15 in total). After 5 sessions you will automatically become a junior member of the club and future sessions will be free.

Feel free to turn up to a session or contact lead coach Helen Ballam for more information. ballam@sky.com (01284 706522)

Surprising Go-Ride

Surprising Go-Ride

In the midst of the summer season of racing, club rides and big events, it's easy to forget the amazing work done by the club's Go-Ride team. Like everything that happens in the club, it is down to volunteers to make our activities happen and arguably inspiring the next generation of Wheelers is the most important.

Go Ride Games

The Go Ride Games were held at Abbeycroft Leisure with John Stockwell (BC Coach) leading. The day was split into 4 one hour sessions; the first 3 were Go Ride coaching sessions and the final was a Go-Race. Children could come from all or part of the day. Overall we had 43 riders through with 25 taking part in the Go Race session. The Go Race involved a 2 lap or 1 lap time trial around the athletics track and a scratch race around a grass track. The group was split into 3 age groups; 10 and under, 13 and under and 14 or above.

It was great to see Max Bidewell, Matthew and Sam Asker and Matthew and Grace Whitwell all taking part. Max, Sam and Matthew A made it a clean sweep in the 13 and under time trial. Matthew W was a strong 3rd in his age group’s time trial too. Matt and Sam couldn’t quite catch the front runner in their scratch race but did enough for 2nd and 3rd respectively. Grace, as the youngest rider, put in two good performances too! Medals and Prizes were received and many leaflets handed out so maybe a few more young riders will be heading our way! Thank you to everyone who helped, especially those there as parents who got called upon!

Go Ride 2012

This year’s Go-Ride built on the success of the last few years. With over 50 children on the books and 30 or more turning up each week we’ve had some great evenings if a little chaotic. The children have had the opportunity to learn and refine their basic skills then test them out riding through the trees and tackling the skills test. With an extra coach this year we have been able to split the group and tailor the sessions to their needs and abilities.
