Highfields Treasure Hunt

Despite icy conditions following a sharp frost, 28 participants took part in this event on Dec 28. Riders arranged themselves into 9 teams, ranging from racing pairings, families, and couples ~ most of whom survived any conflict brought on by the ordeal. After an optional timed ‘prologue’ for bonus points, the teams set off to find the answers to various questions, with the aid of a detailed map and devious clues. They had 1 hour 40 minutes to get as many points as they could and be back on time. In contrast to previous years only one team suffered time penalties ~ I won’t divulge which team this was, but Lindsay’s Dad was third quickest on the prologue and gained some bonus points to help offset the penalties. Young Jonathon Sjolin was the quickest and Richard Lines second on the prologue.

2 November 2009 WET, WET, WET or Nine get Inundated

It was dark, but there was no rain - just an occasional drizzle-y drop, as I rode up and down the A1088 filling in time before the Bury Bunch arrived, with the Thurston Contingent. Somehow or other, we must have passed my house about three minutes before Lindsay Clayton arrived; some time after the advertised 07:20, but crucial moments before the 07:30 that Lindsay thought she should be there.

There was more to come. I joined the front of the group, and didn't fully take in who was on board. Only later did Peter Heath ask "where's Jonathan?". We discovered later from his e-mail that the poor chap had a real, full-on, "BANGGss-Phssss-Phsssss-Phssssss-Phssssss" puncture., just at the point where the ride turned right to Woolpit 'Nord' and A14. Being a relative newcomer he didn't immediately shout at the top of his voice, the magic word "PUNCHERRR!!!" which (usually) brings the most determined ride to a halt. So that was the end of HIS ride.

We rode into Woolpit and collected Richard 'TomTom' Seggar. 50yds further on, "BANGGss-Phssss-Phsssss-Phssssss-Phssssss" and Andy Davison's rear tyre gasped its last. As Andy tried to work out which of the several cuts in his tyre might be responsible for the puncture, Peter seized the victims spare tube collection and held it up in horror. Despite all this ritual humiliation by friends and sabotage by equipment, Andy was soon back in the saddle, and we headed off towards Onehousewhere he decided finally to throw in the towel as it became obvious that the replacement tube was going down. He was going to go to his mother's house nearby, he said.

New club hill climb record

Neil takes the Hill Climb Record!

Photo evidence just received from Neil Dykes suggesting that he has taken the Club Hill Climb Record. The picture shows Neil at the highest pass in Ecuador at 4,068m, unfortunately he has forgotten to include his bike in the picture so we have to take his word for it!

I've had an adventure today, and now I've got the mosquito situation under control in this rather comfortable room at The Riverside Hotel in Xingping. (£5 without breakfast), I'm going to try to explain how it unfolded...

I have lost my faith in Chinese maps. I set out today to ride South 43m from Guilin to Yangshou on the back roads crises crossing the river. The first bridge I came to wasn't there at all, so I talked a local into transporting me and the bike across on a little boat. He could of mentioned that after another mile the road disappeared into the water again. Or maybe he did, my Mandarin is sketchy. So I decided he must of meant that the footpath up the cliff was the way through. So I started up the path. Honestly, any steeper and it would have been impossible, several times I strained myself against the threat of falling over backwards.
