Wheeler Andrew Brinkley on Top Form

Stowmarket & District Cycling Club hosted the Mid Suffolk Road Race on Sunday, a Regional B Race for 3rd and 4th category riders. In poor weather, the 54 mile long race took place over multiple circuits around Offton/Willisham/Barking/Ringshall and Gt Bricett.

Brinkley was on fine form, and managed to pull clear with 2 other riders on the last lap. Soon Brinkley and Robert Ormond of the host club pulled further away from the weather reduced field of 16 before Brinkley attacked on his own near the finish. Proving too strong for Ormond, Brinkley (in his first season of racing) powered over for a spectacular victory just as the threatened rain storm erupted.

British Triathlon Championships

West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club father and daughter duo Julian and Esther Colman competed in the British Triathlon Championships in Liverpool on Sunday.

Both raced in the standard distance (1500m swim; 40km bike and 10km run) on a course which took in closed roads around the city centre, with the swim section in the docks. Both were more than equal to the atrocious weather conditions, with the unrelenting rain and wind playing havoc and blowing over the metal barriers and signs.

Esther continued her fine recent performances with an overall time of 2:25:12 (22:35 swim leg, 1:10:32 bike and 46:50 run) for 2nd U20 female.

Julian also put in a fine effort of 2:46:56 (29:06; 1:20:53 and 49:30) to cap a great day’s racing for the Colman family.

Junior Triathlon

The 2nd Junior Summer Duathlon was held on Sunday at the Lee Valley Velopark, part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Held on a multiple loop, closed road circuit surrounding the Olympic Velodrome, the series of three events provides junior triathletes to race in and around this iconic arena.

Two West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club members took part and both produced excellent podium finishes.

In the TriStar 1 race (ages 9-10) Charlie Knowler raced well over his distances (600m run/3km bike ride/600m run)for a superb 2nd.

Club mate Oscar Woodward in the TriStar 2 event (11-12, 1.2km run/5km bike ride/1.2km run) raced particularly well and will be very pleased with his effort, a strong bike leg contributed to his 3rd overall.

The final race is on the 12th October 2014, www.veloparkduathloncom/childrens-series.

Time Trials

6 members of West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club took part in the Veterans’ Time Trial Association’s 10 mile open time trial on a very blustery A143 at Bungay on Saturday.

Battling into a strong return leg head wind, gutsy performances from Ron Back (25:14 for 1st in age group and 2nd overall on age standard), David Howes (25:28) and Mark Eastwood (25:50) was enough to win the team race for the club on age standard.

Determined rides from club mates David Young (26:51), John Coles (26.50) and John Steel (26:10) rounded off the results.

This capped another good week for Ron Back, who had already bagged 1st in age category at the previous week’s Finsbury Park 25 mile TT held at St. Neots.

Chronos RT held its 10 mile open time trial on a very windy out and back course along the A428 at Caxton on Saturday.

A strong headwind on the out leg produced a wind assisted return, with Wheelers Mark Eastwood (25:31), John Coles (25:58) and Jim Greenwood (26:11) riding well.

Cyclocross training

Maglia Rosso are pleased to announce that their CycloCross track is ready for training use. We have prepared a one-mile circuit on the field behind the shop/café incorporating most of the features that you encounter in competition including undulations, tight left and right bends, tight single track in the trees, dismounts, up and down banks, sandpit and a bridge across the pond. It’s hard work, but good fun and excellent training. (Future features may include steps and even some pave).

It is open to WSW&TC members and non-affiliated cyclists of all ages on CX or mountain bikes, and use is FREE, but everyone needs to sign an indemnity (at the shop) before using the course, and under 18’s need signed parental consent, and everyone needs to wear a cycling helmet.

It is normally open only 9-5.30 everyday, but for the next few weeks we are also opening it for use on TUESDAY EVENINGS, 6-7.30ish.

So come over and give it a try ~ it’s not just aimed at those intending to race CycloCross ~ everyone can improve their bike skills and have some fun too.
