West Suffolk Triathlon

Sunday 28th September was our latest Triathlon and it was a resounding success.  We had the weather on our side - it was very warm and only a light wind.  There were over 250 entrants, up from 200 the previous year, enabled because we used the external services of Stu Web Race Timing to chip time each of the competitors.

The setting up started at 6am, getting the transition area for bikes and kit, signs for bike, run and transition set up, with competitors starting to arrive from about 7.30.  We had lots of help from  club members and friends who helped with setting up, car parking, registration and a host of other jobs.   By 0850 all the bikes are racked, competitors kit set out how they want it in their space in transition, and it is time for the race briefing for the competitors and, in a separate room, the helpers briefing takes place.

Time goes so quickly, and in no time the first swimmer is off at 0930, then every 30s the next swimmer starts.  The last swimmer started at 1136, so a bit of hanging around for those competitors but it is accepted, but a pretty hectic time for all those involved.  The swimmers get progressively faster the later they start.   The transition area is used to make the change from swim to bike, and then from bike to run.  Competitors need to complete these ‘fourth disciplines’ as quickly as they can and seconds really can make the difference between winning and losing.

The chip timing enabled us to get results out very quickly at the end, and with only one timing query.  By 1300 we had completed the prize giving, and then the packing away and unloading back at the club room finishes things off.  The overall winners were Ben Caisey from Ipswich Triathlon Club, and Wheeler Hannah McInroy Naylor.  The novice prizes were won by James Hayward and Louise Goddard, both members of the Stowmarket Striders.  A big well done to all of them, and to all our age group winners.  Full details can be found on the Wheelers website, together with loads of photos taken by helpers at various points on the course.

Putting on a triathlon takes a huge amount of effort, and it certainly doesn’t happen by accident. We had a great team this year which really enabled us to pull out the stops.  I have received literally dozens of e mails from competitors saying how much they enjoyed the event and will be back for more next year!  So many of the e mails paid tribute to the standard of marshalling, and the enthusiasm and encouragement that was shown, and it was greatly appreciated.

So the last task is to sort out the expenses from the event and get all the suppliers paid.  It is nearly done, and then we can start the outline planning for next year!  Thanks to our sponsors, Greenright Homes, and to Maglia Rosso for their support and encouragement, and for contributing towards the ‘goodie’ bags each competitor was given.

The results and photos can be found from the link below:

One amusing e mail from a happy competitor went like this:

‘What a great day and organised the weather as well, Carlsberg don’t do Triathlons but if they did…..’

Thanks again everyone, it was great!

Cross Country League

It is getting to that time of year again, and the Cross Country league kicks off again on the  last Sunday in October.  WSWTC has put in a team now for the past five years and we are planning to do the same again this year.  There are 5 races in the league from October to March, all in different venues – Framlingham, Woodbridge, Bungay, Haughley Park and Bury.  We car share to get everyone there, generally meeting at the Club Room about 9am.  Individuals get points based on age group and position, and the aggregate score ranks our club against about a dozen other local clubs including the Saint Edmund Pacers and Stowmarket Striders.  The more competitors, and the better we do, the better our ranking will be!  The distance is about 5 miles per event.  The events are really fun and very friendly.  After the run there is always lashings of tea and coffee, and a table heaving with cakes.  You might not lose any weight but you will sleep well that night.

Lots of you run, but it would be great if you could join us for the X Country league.  It is fun, and your club needs you….it puts a whole new dimension on a dirty weekend!
