Lightning Talks -28th January

Monday 28th January. Starting at 7.30pm, WSW & Tri HQ

An Evening of short talks (5 minutes or less)

This evening of talks is a little different to the other winter talks we have had so far this season. The WSW & Tri Lightning Talks evening is a series of short (5mins) talks from as many people as we can get to talk!

List of Speakers/Topics

  • Justin Wallace - Things you need on your bike and things you don't
  • Michael Lawson - topic to be confirmed
  • Barry Denny - topic to be confirmed
  • Kevin Bradley - The Bike Bag
  • Glenn Morris - topic to be confirmed (prov)
  • Ben Stephens - Cent Cols Challenge
  • Steve Newman - topic to be confirmed

  • Dale Sturman - 24 Hour TT
  • James - Physio
  • Richard Emmerson - Tubeless mountain bike tyre systems
  • Stuart Compton - Competing in endurance events (Triathlons) with Diabetes

Each talk will be 5 minutes or less and will be strictly timed. You can use slides/powerpoint, but you don't need to. In fact, it may be better not to as there isn't much time. You will need to use you time wisely. The evening will be split into sections, so the audience can ask the presenters questions at the end of each section. The aim is to the keep the evening flowing as quickly as possible.

The talks can be about anything related to cycling, triathlon or anything else that will be of interest to members.

In order to make the evening a success, I need lots of people to give talks. We would like as many participants as possible so if you have an idea for a talk and would like to sign up, please contact Ian (admin@westsuffolkwheelers.co.uk). We would also like as many people as possible to come and listen, so put the date in your diary (or Facebook)

What are Lightning Talks?

A Lightning talk is a short presentation given at a conference or similar forum. Unlike other presentations, lightning talks last only a few minutes and several will usually be delivered in a single period by different speakers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_talk

How long does each talk last?

5 minutes

Can I use powerpoint/photos/visual aids?

Yes, but remember that 5 minutes isn't very long so you won't need many.

Will there be time for questions?

Not during the talks, but after each section of the evening you can ask question to any of the speakers. Plus there will be time to for discussion during the refreshments.

Refreshments?

Yes, there will be some refreshments available. Tea, coffee, water. Maybe a biscuit.

What can the talks be about?

Cycling, triathlon, swimming, running, cyclo-cross, touring, watching the Olympics – anything that would be interesting to club members.

Could you be more specific and suggest some examples?

You could talk about:

  • A major event you have participated in, such as a championship

  • Events you took part in last year

  • Your training plan for 2013

  • The particular sport you compete in (handcycling, triathlon, cyclocross etc)

  • Your favourite cyclist

  • Your bike

  • A review of a book/film/TV show (cycling/tri related)

  • Websites or training books you have found useful

  • Your experiences of your first year in the club

  • Your experiences of your first twenty-five years in the club

  • Coming back to the sport after some time out

Sounds great, I want to give a talk, what do I have to do?

Please let me know what you want to talk about and I'll add you to the schedule. Please email admin@westsuffolkwheelers.co.uk

I want to come and listen to the talks, do I need a ticket?

No, but you can sign up to the event on Facebook, or email me to let you know you will be attending. This is helpful for planning how many chairs to put out and how many biscuits to buy.
