‘Cross: A Winter Wonderland (Round 14)
I’m very pleased to report a great day’s sport that we promoted on Saturday (19th January) as the final leg of the Eastern Cross League at King Edward School.
First of all a big THANK YOU to all the members that put in such an effort to put this event on, when everyone expected us to give in to the weather and cancel it!
We had plenty of volunteers on Friday evening to make a start on course preparation, a great working party from 7.30am Saturday morning and a veritable army of marshals for the duration of the event, doing a great job and encouraging the riders, clearing up afterwards and a terrific crew offering catering all day and supplying some excellent cakes!
We aimed to put on the BEST EVENT of the season and despite the weather being against us, I think we did. We have already been congratulated by the Cross League committee and by many competitors.
. . . . not only that, but our riders did us proud as well!
Mike Bowen recovered from a poor start to finish second in the vets, and claim SILVER in the League, with Paul Watson 18th, Mike Lawson 27th and Adi Grimwood 32nd. In the U12 race Sam Asker had his best result ever with a brilliant 2nd, with Frazer Elsworth 4th, Matt Whitwell 14th (4th U10), Max Bidewell 19th, and Oliver Griggs 23rd (8th U10). This result saw Frazer finish 5th and Sam =6th in the league, with Matt and Oliver 5th and 7th respectively in the U10s. Robin Lines made his cross debut and finished a very creditable 15th in the U16s. In the Snr/Jnr race Alan Trolove took a break from road training to ride and finished 26th (2nd Jnr) and Richard Stiff came 34th.
These results saw the WSW&TC gain the overall team win for the first time ever, the results being calculated on the best three riders in any category. This lifted us to THIRD overall in the Club/Team classification for the season (and the best placed club from Suffolk).
SO, WELL DONE EVERYONE !!
