Sun shines on the crossers at Davy Down
We drove all the way to Davy Down, right by the Lakeside Shopping Centre, in torrential rain and the return trip was made in even heavier rain, but for the duration of the racing the sun shone and a good time was had by all 17 West Suffolk riders and their supporters. As is now the norm we erected the Club Gazebo alongside the course and used it as a club HQ, from which to cheer on our representative riders in every race on the programme.
First up were the Under 10s, with Harley Gregory having another great ride to be first U8 and 10th overall, just ahead of Oliver Griggs 11th, Charlie Knowler 12th, Victoria Asker 13th and Grace Whitwell 19th. Her brother Matt finished 25th in the U12 event with Lianna Denny coming home 32nd after a dreadful start.
The Old Boys were next with Mike Bowen suffering gear problems on lap one and finishing in a unfamiliar 13th place. Next up was Adrian Grimwood 43rd, Barry Denny 47th, Darren Baker 52nd and David Griggs 64th.
The fast and furious U16s followed with Sam Asker coming home 19th after a tumble, brother Matt 35th, and Fraser Elsworth also crashing but finishing gamely in 41st.
We had just two riders in the Senior race of a full hour’s duration on the excellent course, a mixture of muddy grassland and twisty turns in the woods, with a slippery wooden bridge to test the nerve and skill. Matt Denny made his normal meteoric start getting up to a mid-field position and then trying hard to survive, with James Asker gradually catching him lap-by-lap, but on the final lap the gap widened again with Matt finishing 57th and James 61st.
The next event in the League is next Sunday (October 27th) at Mistley in Essex on a demandingly hilly course in the ancient woods.
