West Suffolk Wheelers 21 mile hilly time trial

Almost perfect riding conditions greeted a course record entry list of 61 riders in the West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club’s latest edition of its 21 mile time trial held on a course beginning and finishing in Risby and taking in Flempton/Lackford and Poor Man’s Heath.

A quality field of riders ensured some keenly contested times, which, despite a headwind, resulted in the previous course record of 47:11 being broken by 3 superb rides.

In third place, Mark Arnold of CCDesiragear recorded 46:06, second in 46:07 was local trade team member Matt Smith of VeloVelocity but the top result of the day belonged to Jason Boutell also of VeloVelocity who powered round in a very impressive 45:43 in doing so demolishing the existing course record.

An equally impressive turnout from the organising club saw 24 finishers also produceing a fine crop of results.

Ron Back, who also oversaw the organisation of this well regarded event, rode well to finish in 57:28 for 2nd in his veterans’ standard, Paul Rooke was first Wheeler home in 51:47 and Trish Goulden first lady in 56:26.

The event was also notable for debuts over this distance from a number of riders, youngest of which was 17 year old Alice Maguire who will be pleased with her time of 1:10:59.

  • The West Suffolk Wheelers cycling club was formed in 1922 and is based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We have a good cross-section of cycling on offer to welcome new and experienced cyclists alike. If you wish to learn bike handling skills for on and/or off-road cycling our members have the knowledge and experience to teach you. The Club is proud of it's development work with young people, and we have coaches to guide new cyclists in their training. We are active in all areas of cycling including: Road Racing, Time Trials, Track Racing, Club Runs,Touring, Audax, Sportive, Mountain Biking and Cyclo-cross. Members also compete in triathlon competitions; the Club is recently affiliated to Triathlon England, and new triathlete members are welcomed
