Triathlon juniors make a splash in southwold
WSW & Tri Club juniors were out in force last weekend for the first triathlon of this seasons Eastern League events. With 16 club triathletes taking part, many of whom in their very first multi sport race, every age group was represented at the St Felix Junior Triathlon in Southwold.
First off were the Tristar Start age group for 8 year olds. Although not a large field, the Club was well represented by Thomas Vezijl and Stuart Adam in the boys race, and Vicky Asker in the girls. Victory for Stuart and Vicky, and 3rd place for Thomas really got the day off to a great start.
The Tristar 1 race for 9-10 year olds had a field of 20 entrants with Oscar Woodward taking 5th place in the boys race in his maiden event, with Charlie Knowler and George Cain following closely behind in 8th and 9th respectively. In the girls race Kathleen Adam surprised herself with a fantastic bronze medal performance.
Tristar 2 (11-12 year olds) was the largest race of the day with 37 entrants. Sam Asker excelled on both the bike and run sections of the race to get silver in the boys race ,with Johan Hasselder following behind in a creditable 6th. Annalise Verzijl led the West Suffolk girls home in 12th place, with Jennifer Adam just behind in 14th. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties Catherine McKeag was not given a finishing time despite one of the fastest cycle times of her group and a gut wrenching run, and was therefore not placed.
Tristar 3 (13-14 year olds) athletes Matthew Asker and Casey-Jo Maggs both had good runs to finish the race with Casey recording the fastest swim time, and Matt one of the quickest bike splits. Matt finished 9th in the boys race, with Casey 11th in the girls, out of an overall entry of 32 athletes.
Finally the Youth category for 15-16 year olds, where novice triathlete George Morris achieved 6th place after a blistering swim, and Myles Taylor finished 11th after a solid performance in all 3 disciplines.
After all of our athletes had cheered each other on throughout the day (we really were the most vocal supporters of any club there), the day was capped off with fish and chips on the beach.
16 athletes; 5 podium finishes, 2 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes; 1 great team.
