West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club bumper medal haul at Norwich Tri
The Wheelers’ triathletes were on exemplary form once again last weekend where both the Juniors and Seniors were competing at the Norwich Triathlon. Juniors Alice Maguire and Johan Hasselder both took age group honours in their respective events.
Maguire exited the 300m pool swim 34 seconds behind the leader but overtook on the 6km cycle section and pulled out a further 50 seconds before the transition to the 2.4km run. Although the 2nd place girl was slightly quicker on the run Maguire was able to comfortably hold her off and finished in 31:59, 26 seconds ahead of second place. Hasselder exited the 150m pool swim in his race in 6th place but an astonishing cycle on the 2km course saw him regain the 30 seconds lost in the pool and take the lead. Hasselder’s prowess also came to bear in the 1.2km run where he extended his lead to 16 seconds before crossing the line in 1st place. The Seniors race was held at Whitlingham Country park, just outside Norwich, where Nicky Brinkman, James Heath and Adrian Barbrooke tackled the Olympic Distance course comprising of 1500m open water swim, 39km cycle and 11km run. Until a matter of hours before the start of the race organisers had notified the course switching to a Duathlon due to unsafe levels of Blue Green Algae being recorded in the lake. However conditions improved sufficiently that the race was able to return to it’s original format. Barbrooke was the first Wheeler home in 10th place overall and 1st in age group by almost 4 minutes. Heath, also on fine form, came in 15th position overall and won his age group by a tremendous 13 minutes. Brinkman’s sterling effort saw her cross the line as 2nd lady overall and first in age group just over a minute ahead of the nearest rival in her age group; Maxine Burgess of Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon club who was third lady overall.
