The WSW has club rides for all abilities and is a good way meeting like minded individuals. It improves your riding technique and gives you confidence in riding within a couple which can be 20% more efficient than cycling by yourself!

Dawn Raid to Mersea Island

This year the Dawn Raid is to Mersea Island and will take place on Sunday 24th June leaving from the Club HQ at 6 a.m.  The ride to Mersea is 53 miles and will be at a steady pace and we aim to arrive at 9.30 for breakfast at The Art Café.

For the journey home, depending on numbers, the ride will split into groups of about 10 and will be ability based to ensure everybody gets home at a pace they feel comfortable with. If you would like to ride then please put your name down as the group will be limited to 30 people.  We are waiting for a copy of the menu which should arrive shortly and you will be requested to pre-order.  Menu details are on the café website

Bury to Geneva

WSW members Julian Long & Tricia Goulden will be cycling 1000km from Bury St Edmunds to the Alps, taking in Holland, Belgium, France and Switzerland en route to Geneva. From there they will ride up to the ski resort of Morzine where they will compete in the Morzine Vallée d'Aulps sportive – a distance of 160km with 4000m of climbing over five Alpine passes.

They are supporting the East Anglian Air Ambulance and welcome any donations via JustGiving www.justgiving.com/BurytoGeneva

Cycle to Rwanda

A group of four cyclists including our own Neil Dykes will be cycling 6000 miles to Rwanda raising money to provide sports equipment for 140 Rwandan schools

You can take part in the launch ride leaving from the West Suffolk Wheelers Club HQ  Shakers Lane on Saturday 28th April 12.30pm to travel to Harwich.  All the details are in the attached flyer.  You can read all about the team and follow their route on their website as well as watching a recent clip of them on BBC Look East.

If you are in awe of them as much as we are and don't fancy cycling, please make any donations via their website any amount is gratefully received.

TOWIE CLUB RUN ... Sunday 12th February 2012

9am (or earlier if majority wish) from HQ

I am thinking of trying a special pre-Valentines Day club run for those who like it slightly harder and faster...

The only way is Essex Club run to Poppy's Tea Room, Thaxted.
Lovely place Thaxted. Really nice Cafe stop by all accounts. www.poppystearoom.co.uk
65 miles ish in 4 hours 15 mins (including the stop)... 18 to 18.5mph average speed, mixed terrain.
It is SW of Bury, so likely to be out into the wind and back with tail wind ...
I will lead it and navigate it.
I aim to make it brisk, not stupid, but fun and with an enjoyable and different tea stop.
We will of course not race for primes ;-) or hilltops 8-)

So, anyone up for the TOWIE A+ ?

If enough people express an interest I will seek approval from the Club to run as a one off experimental A+ ride.

About the West Suffolk Wheelers

  • The West Suffolk Wheelers cycling club was formed in 1922 and is based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We have a good cross-section of cycling on offer to welcome new and experienced cyclists alike. If you wish to learn bike handling skills for on and/or off-road cycling our members have the knowledge and experience to teach you. The Club is proud of it's development work with young people, and we have coaches to guide new cyclists in their training. We are active in all areas of cycling including: Road Racing, Time Trials, Track Racing, Club Runs,Touring, Audax, Sportive, Mountain Biking and Cyclo-cross.
