Sam Asker Impressive in National Cyclo Cross Championships
Derby hosted the National Cyclo Cross Championships on the 11th January. Attracting the best cyclo cross club riders from around the country in all age categories, this fiercely competitive event saw Sam Asker represent West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club in his first year at Under 14 Boy level.
Heavy overnight rain made for extremely challenging conditions under wheel with the course rapidly resembled a quagmire. This required a high degree of bike handling skills and strength, particularly around the tricky cambers and through the dismount sections when riders had to shoulder their bikes in order to climb the ascents.
58 riders began, with Sam gridded 4th from the front. To begin with, Sam was equal to the conditions and acquitted himself extremely well. Starting at a fast pace, Sam put this season’s cyclo cross league racing to good effect and pushed himself to rapidly carve out a high placing in the first half of this 30 minute race.
However, the course began to cut up and, along with a number of fellow competitors, Sam took a spill and suffered a puncture. Despite inevitably losing places in remounting his bike, Sam continued in his trademark determined fashion and will be very pleased with his finish of 23rd from 49 finishers, a fine reward for his season’s efforts.

Lightning Talk Evening
Monday 17th February. Starting at 7.30pm, WSW & Tri HQ
An Evening of short talks (5 minutes or less)
Following on from last year’s successful evening we will have another night of Lightning Talks. It is a series of short talks from as many people as we can get to present!
Each talk will be 5 minutes or less and will be strictly timed. You can use slides/powerpoint, but you don't need to. In fact, it may be better not to as there isn't much time. You will need to use you time wisely. The evening will be split into sections, so the audience can ask the presenters questions at the end of each section. The aim is to the keep the evening flowing as quickly as possible.
The talks can be about anything related to cycling, triathlon or anything else that will be of interest to members.
In order to make the evening a success, I need lots of people to give talks. We would like as many participants as possible so if you have an idea for a talk and would like to sign up, please contact Paul Callow paul_callow at hotmail.com.
We would also like as many people as possible to come and listen, so put the date in your diary
