National Recognition for Trish Goulden

In the National Women’s 10 Mile Time Trial held on the A11 course at Watton on the 25th May 2013, West Suffolk Wheeler & Triathlon Club member Trish Goulden finished a superb 1st in the Women’s 50-54 age category.

Trish was presented with her Group Champion gold medal at an awards ceremony on the 18th January 2013 at the Cycling Time Trials Champions’ Night awards ceremony held in Hinckley.

This capped a very successful year for the West Suffolk Wheeler, with Trish also finishing 17th overall in the Best of British All Rounder series in which she competed in distances of 25, 50 and 100 miles and for which her average overall speed over these three distances was a remarkable 23.969 mph.

Trish also finished 1st overall in the Veterans Ladies Time Trial Association’s series and is current reigning champion of East Anglia in her category, and in doing so broke all but one of the club’s women’s time trial records.

Cycle Club Sudbury Reliability Ride Sunday 26 January

Three members of WSW and Tri took part in the early season Reliability Ride on Sunday 26 January organised by Cycle Club Sudbury, each nominating the longer 46 mile distance to be covered at the (slower) 15 mph speed.  Memories of last year’s event when hub deep floods were negotiated at Rattlesden and Cockfield were fresh in the mind.  The forecast for rain and increasing Southerly wind were duly noted as we set off from the car park.  In the end the wind was kind up to the half way point outside Stowmarket enabling a good above average speed to be banked before returning for a tougher test on the return leg against the wind and the increasing rain.

All 3 returned successfully inside the target time and announced they were pleased with their performances.  For Will, this was the anniversary of his first event after joining the club a year ago, and it was a good indication of progress and fitness.   Henry and Martyn, are also relative newcomers to the Club as they return to cycling as a sport, have another ‘Etape du Tour’ as their target for later this year and are looking to build up speed and stamina over the next 6 months.  All 3 will be at the Suffolk Punch next Sunday!

New Teastop

My name is Eleanor Corble, I co-run Dutch Barn Nurseries at Blo Norton on the Norfolk/Suffolk border between Diss and Thetford.
We are a new coffee shop and are proving to be a popular stop off point for local cyclists. We currently have hot drinks and homemade cakes available but will be expanding to offer light lunches this year.

I found your club through a local search, if you think we would be on any of your planned routes this year and may want to stop by we would be very glad to see you! As a one man band kind of coffee shop we would need prior notice for more than a few but we would do our best to cater for your needs.

Our website is www.dutchbarnnursery.co.uk, we are also on facebook and pinterest.

Thankyou for your time, kind regards, E. Corble.

Request for Photos for Ixworth Crit Programme

For those of you who don’t know the Ixworth Crits organising committee are working away behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event is the best ever. I’ve volunteered to compile and organise the printing of the programme and, having got some initial layouts approved by the committee, the time has come to start finalising the pages of artwork. To this end I would love to hear from fellow Wheelers with photographs of last year’s event. It might sound obvious but I’m looking for clean, sharp images - I recall lots of budding “Graham Watsons” being there last year so I’m expecting some top notch stuff! This year’s headline race is for Elite and 1st Cat riders only, and whilst (as far as I know) no trade teams have confirmed yet, we do expect at least a smattering of UK-based pro riders to compete. Therefore if anyone has pics from the final round of last year’s Tour Series in Ipswich they’d be pretty useful too.

If you have some images you think fit the bill please get in touch, all contributors will be credited.

~ Thanks, Richard Stiff

Lightning Talk Evening

Monday 17th February. Starting at 7.30pm, WSW & Tri HQ

An Evening of short talks (5 minutes or less)

Following on from last year’s successful evening we will have another night of Lightning Talks. It is a series of short talks from as many people as we can get to present!

Each talk will be 5 minutes or less and will be strictly timed. You can use slides/powerpoint, but you don't need to. In fact, it may be better not to as there isn't much time. You will need to use you time wisely. The evening will be split into sections, so the audience can ask the presenters questions at the end of each section. The aim is to the keep the evening flowing as quickly as possible.

The talks can be about anything related to cycling, triathlon or anything else that will be of interest to members.

In order to make the evening a success, I need lots of people to give talks. We would like as many participants as possible so if you have an idea for a talk and would like to sign up, please contact Paul Callow paul_callow at hotmail.com.

We would also like as many people as possible to come and listen, so put the date in your diary.
