Suffolk Punch - Large Turnout for West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club’s Reliability Trial
The bright winter sunshine proved a big attraction for the 131 riders who signed on for the annual Suffolk Punch Reliability Trial hosted by West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club on the 2nd February.
With three routes of 36, 60 and 75 miles and a number of time limits to choose from there was something to suit every level of fitness. The host club was well represented, along with a strong contingent from Ipswich Bicycle Club.
Special mention must go to Ipswich Bicycle Club’s Roman Powlowkz, who, having competed in a race in London the previous day, showed no evidence of fatigue when he lined up amongst the unprecedented number of 60 riders who opted to start the tough and challenging 75 mile course.
Five riders in this group came in under the 13mph cut off time; 27 made it inside 15 mph and a record 11 riders returned inside the 18mph average speed. Not only was Roman one of the very first riders back in this fast group, but he had already cycled to the event from Ipswich and had a return trip to contend with!
23 riders set off on the 36 mile route and all made it back, with five making the 11mph cut off time; 5 the 13mph time; 12 the 15mph time and one the 18mph.
The more testing 60mile route shared some of the hilly 75 mile route east of Newmarket and attracted 48 riders. Despite a few non finishers, the vast majority finished within their respective time limits: 12 at 13mph; 27 at 15mph and 2 at 18mph. First home, and following a successful cyclo cross season, was the host club’s Mike Bowen. Meanwhile, and showing no sign of slowing down, was the Wheelers’ Tony Panting, who, approaching his 80th birthday, finished imperiously.
Showing his dad a clean pair of (w)heels was 13 year old Sam Asker, also on the back of a successful cyclo cross season and who finished 2 minutes faster than dad James.
Suffolk Cross Country League
Round three of the Suffolk Winter cross country league was run at Haughley park, Stowmarket on Sunday 2nd November. Six WSW & Tri club members ran the 8.5k course. Keith Merra the pick of the bunch coming a well run 13th, Phil Clarke 87th and Sharron Perry 116th, other creditable finishers were Paul Sawyer, David Leaver and Simon Kitching. In the Junior race Niamh Perry came a well run 34th ending a successful weekend in which she also competed for Suffolk at swimming and cross country.

Lightning Talk Evening
Monday 17th February. Starting at 7.30pm, WSW & Tri HQ
An Evening of short talks (5 minutes or less)
Following on from last year’s successful evening we will have another night of Lightning Talks. It is a series of short talks from as many people as we can get to present!
Each talk will be 5 minutes or less and will be strictly timed. You can use slides/powerpoint, but you don't need to. In fact, it may be better not to as there isn't much time. You will need to use you time wisely. The evening will be split into sections, so the audience can ask the presenters questions at the end of each section. The aim is to the keep the evening flowing as quickly as possible.
The talks can be about anything related to cycling, triathlon or anything else that will be of interest to members.
In order to make the evening a success, I need lots of people to give talks. We would like as many participants as possible so if you have an idea for a talk and would like to sign up, please contact Paul Callow paul_callow at hotmail.com.
We would also like as many people as possible to come and listen, so put the date in your diary.
