Newmarket Triathlon
Sunny Sunday 18th May saw a big Wheelers team of 14 enter the Newmarket Triathlon.
Based around Newmarket Leisure center, the 300m pool swim saw competitor’s going off every 30 seconds, Marc Verzijl setting the second fastest swim time of 4:05 across 12 lengths.
The bike route had competitors going out of Newmarket to the horse round-a-bout and then completing 2 laps of a triangular circuit and back to the sports center, followed by 2 laps of 2k run loop, Keith Marra setting the 2nd fastest time run of 14:52.
Some great results by club members and also a good team effort with everyone offering encouragement and cheering.
A super overall time saw Keith Marra finish 3rd in 55:56
2nd Lady Annie Drugan 1:07:37, Darren Sharman 13th and 1st in Age Group 1:01:20, Rachel Compton 1st in Age Group 1:14:34.

Time Trials
The Ipswich Bicycle Club’s 10 Mile time trial held on Sunday saw 3 Wheelers in action.
1st Wheeler home was Paul Rooke (6th overall) in a very respectable 24:40, followed by club mates David Howse (22nd, 27:07) and Gerry Barton (30th, 30:56). The event was won by Diss & District CC’s Steve Garbut in 23:11.
Ron Back Smashes East Anglian Record
West Suffolk Wheeler & Triathlon Club member Ron Back powered his way around the Eastern Counties Cycling Association’s 50 mile time trial course on Saturday to set a new course group age record. Held on and around the Newmarket/6 Mile Bottom/Four Wantways course in deceptively windy, hot and challenging conditions, Ron’s time of 2:04:10 smashed the existing record by almost 3 minutes.
Club mate Trish Goulden cut short her Norfolk walking holiday to ride the course, and, not to be outdone, produced another trademark performance to finish in 2:04:46 for 1st lady to cap a superb day for Wheelers’ time triallists.
Mountain Biking
Round 3 of the Mud Sweat & Gears mountain bike racing series was held at Codham Park near Braintee on Sunday.
A thrilling and very challenging course welcomed the 7 Wheelers who made the trip.
Paul Watson (Grand Vet Male) put in another gutsy performance despite having to make a last minute bike change, but still placed 8th (5 laps in 01:24:40).
Other results were Rhys Holland-Jones 8th (8 laps in 01:00:33) and Sam Asker 18th (2 laps in 00:55:24) (both Juvenile Male); Dick Lines (Open Male) 66th (3 laps in 01:03:10); Malcom Borg (Sport Male) 23rd (5 laps in 01:30:22); Robin Lines (Youth Male) 10th (3 laps in 01:00:33) and in his first foray into mountain bike racing, Matthew Whitwell (Under 12 boys) had a fine race to place 29th (3 laps in 00:27:50).
