Cycle Racing Roundup

West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club members enjoyed a very busy and successful last 7 days in all competitions.

In time trialling Trish Goulden continues her impressive recent form with a personal best in Saturday’s API Metrow CC Zak Carr 25 mile memorial time trial, held on the Newmarket-A14-A11-Four Want Ways course posting 58:18 for 2nd lady and in doing so beat her own age category and personal records.

Ron Back (75) took part in the East District CA 25 mile time trial on a blustery Tilney High End-Wisbech A47 course, and posted an impressive 1:04:56

A windy and hilly course faced David Howes at the Chelmer CC 25 mile time trial at the weekend, and he reacted in fine style with a time of 1:06:31.

The Lotus closed circuit track at Hesset was the venue for the individual 11 mile time trials on Wednesday, held over 5 laps of the 2.2 mile circuit. Dale Sturman, ahead of his forthcoming marathon 24 hour time trial, posted a fine 23:46 for 3rd overall, one place behind was club mate Matthew Shingleton (24:30) with Paul Vickers 6th (24:52). Impressive riding saw Mandy Bunn finish 5th lady (28:54).

Wednesday also saw the first in the Suffolk Cycle Race Series held at Trinity park in Ipswich over a closed circuit just over one mile in length.

Club members raced in 3 groups, with Fabian Horrocks and Fraser Elsworth in the 20 minute U14/U16 age group race. Both raced well, with Fabian determinedly leading home the chasing group.

The 30 minute Go Race event for new racers featured Dermott O’Riordan who rode very well in the 36 strong field, however fellow first time racer Darren Baker felt the pace in an otherwise enjoyable debut.

The main event of the night was the 60 minute long Elite & Category 1,2,3 & 4 race split into 3 ability groups and which featured a good number of Wheelers.

Stand out performances came from Tom Smith and Andy Brinkley who managed to stay with the lead group throughout even when caught up by fast the E, 1 and 2 group. Further back the middle chasing group found Matt Denny, Steve Newman, Malcolm Borg, Matt Eaglen, Richard Stiff, Richard Leeming and Richard Sherman all in determined form.
