Duathlon
Welcome to the 2011 Bury St. Edmunds Duathlon

The event is run under the regulation of the British Triathlon Federation and is based at Beyton Middle School which is in the village of Beyton, east of Bury St. Edmunds, close to Junction 46 of the A14. Please use the Church Road entrance on arrival (Turn at the White Horse Pub).
Marshals will be on hand to show you to the car park area. Take care if driving on the grass, this is a sports field and we want to be invited back!
Signing on / Reception is in the school Gym from 07:30am B.S.T. N.B. CLOCKS CHANGE THE NIGHT BEFORE. Please have your race licence available or complete a day licence.
You will be given two numbers, one to wear on your front during the run and one to wear on your back during the cycling. Number belts are permitted.
We will number your bike when you rack it. There are no fixed positions for the bikes, just find an available space. Once you have left your bike you will not be able to reclaim it without your race number. No number, No Bike. Transition marshals will be checking that handle bar ends (and Tri bars) are taped / plugged, and helmets are of an approved type. You are responsible for the road worthiness and state of repair of your machine. No Helmet, No Ride.
Reception closes at 8:30am followed by the Transition 5min later. The marshals will be briefed at 08:35 and competitors’ final briefing is at 08:45 – advising you of any last minute alterations. Competitors’ cars will not be allowed to enter or leave the school from 08:30 until the last competitor is home. If you need to use your car during the event please park off route within the village, not on site.
There will be four waves of starters at 5min intervals. Your start time will be advised at sign on.
Both the run and the cycle are on the public highway. Marshals are present to check you compete fairly and stay on route. You are responsible for your own safety. The Highway Code must be observed at all times. Dangerous conduct undermines the sport, the event and our club and will lead to immediate disqualification. A map of the route is attached, please familiarize yourself beforehand. Please remember this is rural Suffolk at its best, wild animals, horses and riders, walkers and church goers are not uncommon and the roads are narrow.
The bike route includes one ‘foot down stop’ on both laps. This means; foot on the ground and both wheels stopped rotating. The marshal will confirm you have complied. You must check the junction ahead before making the right turn to continue. A two minute penalty will be applied for non-compliance. This is a no drafting event, pass the rider in front or drop back - you are being watched – and I don’t mean your girlfriend / boyfriend / clubmate!

A BTF referee will be on site throughout the event. The referee’s decision is final.

Duathlon Emergency Procedure
General overview.
All Club members / Help and support team will have mobile telephone number for site manager (Paul Bass 07977346601) and Safety Officer (Mike Cross 077755956625) pre-race.

In case of emergency your own safety is paramount. Do not do anything which may risk your own health and make the situation potentially worse.
Contact either Paul or Mike, explain the nature of the emergency and what help you need. Tell them if you have already called 999.
On site
All Marshals and competitors shall be briefed before the event. In case of the event being stopped the referee will inform radio holders. If the site is to be evacuated the decision will be taken by the Site Manager and/or the Safety Officer. All radio holders shall be informed. The Transition Manager and Referee to stop the event - if in progress. The Entrance Team to stop further access. The safety officer and Site Manager to co-ordinate the evacuation. Marshal co-ordinator to inform the marshals on course. In case of site evacuation the meeting point shall be the Drinkstone Road entrance, leaving the entrance clear for vehicle access.
On the Course
The Marshals shall be briefed before the event. In the event of an emergency your safety is top priority. Do not risk your own health or safety. Be aware of traffic around you. In an emergency call 999 if appropriate. Contact the site manager or safety officer by telephone. Say if you have already rung 999. If in your opinion as a marshal you are looking at a major incident and the event needs to be stopped please make this clear. If an incident stops the event then the Transition Manager will close the transition and the Entrance Team will stop competitors from leaving the site.
