Baker convincing in prestigious Fred Filby Time Trial success

Congratulations to Darren Baker for winning the converted Fred Filby trophy. Finishing only 6 seconds off his target time, Darren won the event from Steve Newman who finished in second place, 12 seconds from his target time. Full results will be on the website soon.

Harley Gregory in convincing form

The penultimate round of the Eastern Cyclo Cross league took place at Snetterton Equestrian Centre, Norfolk, on the 29thDecember. The very cold but otherwise perfect weather conditions hid a slippery and testing course around the grounds including a technical section within the indoor eventing arena itself.

Charlie Knowler continued his good form to finish 2nd in the Under 10 category but strong riding from Harley Gregory saw him finish a convincing 1st in his year group (U8) and 9th overall. Club mate Victoria Asker will also be very pleased with her 15th overall position.

Brothers Sam and Matt Asker contested the youth race, Sam finishing in 10th and Matt in 27th.

Riding for Revel Outdoors in the veterans race, Richard Muchmore finished 2nd with Mike Bowen the highest placed West Suffolk Wheeler & Triathlon club member an excellent 6th. Paul Watson raced well for 14th, Adrian Grimwood impressed for 41st followed by Simon Elsworth (48th), Ian Mortlock (53rd), Barry Denny (55th) and David Griggs (64th).

In the Under 12 race, Thomas Macro placed 13th with Matthew Whitwell 23rd and Lianna Denny 25th.

Completing fine family performances, James Asker finished 61st in the Senior race with Matt Denny 64th. In the same race, Steve James (Revel Outdoors) finished well for 8th. Richard Stiff withdrew with technical issues.

The final round takes place at King Edward VI School on the 18th January, with the club a solid 9th in the league placings.

Calling all members who can help with our CYCLO CROSS on Saturday Jan 18th at KEGS

Preparation Meeting Monday 30th December 7.15pm at the Club Room

I am hoping for lots of volunteers to attend this meeting so that we can allocate important jobs and discuss some of the details of the event, which is the final round of the Eastern Cross League. We are hoping for a bumper entry and want it to be the BEST MEETING OF THE SERIES, keeping up our reputation for first class events.

Upcoming Events

Southend Wheelers' annual Burnham & Baddow Challenge: An early-season 60 mile leg-stretcher for experienced road cyclists around the Essex lanes, featuring the "climb" of North Hill at Little Baddow. (There's also a shorter 25 mile route that misses out North Hill). The course and the entry fee (a mere fiver, payable on the day) remain unchanged, but please note that for 2014 we have a new event HQ at the Airmen's Mess, Stow Maries Aerodrome in Purleigh near Maldon. The modest entry fee also includes free entry to the aerodrome and its museum for riders and their accompanying relatives and friends (normally £4 each).

Stow Maries Aerodrome is the only remaining World War 1 aerodrome in its original state, so this event has special significance as 2014 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. Part of the profits from this event will be donated to the charity that is working to restore the airfield to its former glory.

Event sign-on opens at 08.00 and riders may depart at any time from 08.30 onwards. Riders should be confident of being able to get back to the finish before the event closing time of 14.00, although the aerodrome plus its museum and facilities remains open until 16.00. Catering is provided by the local WI who are also donating their profits to the aerodrome charity.
