Nowton Park Cross Country

A WSW Tri club team of 14 tackled final suffolk winter cross country league race at a muddy Nowton park on Sunday 13th March.

Our ever present junior this season Myles Taylor finished 46th overall. One of the few events to have an under 11's race saw Eloise Perry having her first run out.

In the senior race Keith Merra finished a lofty 9th which should see home come in the top ten overall for the season, Sharon Perry finished 129th despite carrying an knee injury which should see her finish top three for her age group.

Other finishers in the 200 plus field were Chris Brownhill 74th, Phil Clarke 81st, Darren Sharman 82nd despite losing his trainers twice in the thick mud, Julian Colman 118th, Paul Sawyer 144th, David Leaver 146th, Malcolm McFarlane, Simon Kitching and Liz O'Riorden.

Special mention goes to Malcolm who rode the 80 mile wiggle sportive on Saturday before running the 9k cross country on Sunday.

Cycle Club Breckland 10 mile 10 mile Time Trial

Fine, dry and bright conditions awaited riders at the Cycle Club Breckland 10 mile Time Trial on the 1st March.

Held on the Watton-Hingham-Watton road, West Suffolk Wheeler & Triathlon Club members Trish Goulden and David Young both produced fine rides, with Trish continuing her good form from 2013 with a superb 24:59 over the distance for 1st lady (29th overall).

Club mate David Young rode well for 27:29 and 42nd overall.

Wiggle No Excuses 80 mile sportive

Meanwhile, the club was well represented at the 80mile Wiggle No Excuses Sportive held from the Brampton Race Ground near Huntingdon on the 1st March.

Conditions were almost ideal, a fine bright and dry day with a slight south westerly breeze made for a good but challenging ride.

Top rider of the day must be young Max Bidewell who completed by far his furthest distance yet in a terrific chip time of 5:59:25, with dad James just pipping him in 5:59:23. Both earned bronze standard. Just make the most of this one, James. Don’t expect Max to forget…

In probably what was the longest ride to date this year for most club riders (including your correspondent), chip times (but actual ride times were shorter, and in no particular order) for club members were Malcolm MacFarlane 6:15:27 for bronze standard (sportingly guiding his friends around), Kim Bonnelykke who stormed round in 4:19:30 (gold), Michael Lawson 4:23:29 (gold) Guy Lesser 4:27:50 (gold), Jeremy Waterson 4:27:52 (gold), Ian Mortlock 4:32:29 (gold), Darren Aldous 4:32:33 (gold),Will Smith 5: 35:56 (silver) and who, despite the ride title of “No Excuses”, managed to find one when he forgot to turn his garmin back on following a 75 mile comfort break, and Darren Baker 4:48:35 (gold).

Apologies to other club members if anyone has been omitted; there were many hundreds of riders and I tried to look for as many red tops as possible.

The club was also well represented at the Ipswich BC reliability ride, using the south westerly wind for a spot of resistance training.
