Ike Saul RR
In what was a near perfect day for cycling, Lee Sturman of West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club competed in the early season Ike Saul Memorial Road Race held over an open road course of 104 km centred upon the village of Orwell in South Cambridgeshire on Sunday. In a very competitive road mass start road race, provisional results saw Lee finished a very commendable 18th out of 33 starters.
CC Sudbury Hilly TT
Four WSW & Tri members took the opportunity to test their early season fitness at the 22 mile Hilly Time Trial organised by Cycle Club Sudbury over a 35km course around the roads of Great Waldingfield, Newton Green, Monks Eleigh and Lavenham on Sunday. Taking in local climbs such as Semer Hill and the undulating surrounding countryside, the stand out effort came from Paul Rooke who finished the course in 13th (out of 62 finishers) with a time of 54mins 14secs.
Next wheeler home was Malcolm Borg (42nd) in 1:00:59, followed by Gerry Barton (54th) in 1:08:33. Henry Wood suffered a mechanical and did not finish.
MTB: 5x3 Shouldham Warren
The final round of the winter 5 x 3 Mountain Bike race series was held at Shouldham Warren in Norfolk on Sunday. The course was newly extended, hilly and sandy in sections. The headwind made for challenging climbs as the race progressed.
West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club was well represented, with 4 riders contesting the U16 race. Finishing 2nd overall and (first Under 14) Sam Asker, who completed 4 laps in 1 hour 16 mins 53 secs. He was followed by club mates Robin Lines (8th), Rhys Holland-Jones (9th), both ever present in this competition and relishing their racing, and newcomer Matt Asker (10th), all of whom completed 3 laps.
Meanwhile, Paul Watson and Richard Holland-Jones competed in the senior race, with Paul finishing in 18th position (6 laps in 1 hour 25 mins 45 secs) and Richard 46th (4 laps in 1:39:53).
Enduro Cyclo Cross
West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club member Darren Baker made the long trek to Duncton in West Sussex on Sunday to take part in the second Duncton cyclo cross sportive. Held around and over the South Downs, the event is aimed at mountain bikes or cyclo cross bikes with the latter being Baker’s choice.
The extremely challenging 77km course (extended by 1.5 km from 2013) was made more difficult by the unseasonably hot weather, particularly on the seemingly relentless series of off road hill climb over the Downs, some of which gradients topped out at 14%.
The majority of the course consisted of off and back road tracks though farms, across fields and along single track forest trails.
The few sections of true tarmac provided a little welcome respite from the frequent brutal, steep and bone shuddering descents over rock and root strewn tracks which invariably bottomed out into deeply rutted and pot holed mud or, in one case, through cow slurry.
The event probably suited Baker’s preferred riding style, however, with the emphasis on power and endurance as opposed to preferred qualities of power and speed of the Eastern Cyclo Cross League races. Baker’s chip time of 4 hours 41mins was rewarded with 5th (out of 14) in his age category of M50+ and 22/51 overall in all age groups. This was quick enought for an age category bronze standard (Male 50+) and was 6 minutes quicker than the previous year’s effort over a shorter course, even so he was disappointed to miss out on silver by less than 10 minutes.
