West Suffolk Wheelers 21 mile hilly time trial

Almost perfect riding conditions greeted a course record entry list of 61 riders in the West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club’s latest edition of its 21 mile time trial held on a course beginning and finishing in Risby and taking in Flempton/Lackford and Poor Man’s Heath.

A quality field of riders ensured some keenly contested times, which, despite a headwind, resulted in the previous course record of 47:11 being broken by 3 superb rides.

In third place, Mark Arnold of CCDesiragear recorded 46:06, second in 46:07 was local trade team member Matt Smith of VeloVelocity but the top result of the day belonged to Jason Boutell also of VeloVelocity who powered round in a very impressive 45:43 in doing so demolishing the existing course record.

An equally impressive turnout from the organising club saw 24 finishers also produceing a fine crop of results.

Ron Back, who also oversaw the organisation of this well regarded event, rode well to finish in 57:28 for 2nd in his veterans’ standard, Paul Rooke was first Wheeler home in 51:47 and Trish Goulden first lady in 56:26.

The event was also notable for debuts over this distance from a number of riders, youngest of which was 17 year old Alice Maguire who will be pleased with her time of 1:10:59.

Other Wheelers’ results were as follows:

Richard Farrow, 54:47; Brian Alldis, 1:02:10; Adrian Grimwood, 57:56; Andy Sewell, 57:18; Pip Moore, 55:40; Martin Wagner 1:04:24; Stuart Grand, 57:49; Angel Joiner-Handy, 58:46; Boyd Nicholas, 54:56; David Young, 1:02:01; Rob Norman 1:10:23; Darren Davies, 55:35; Darren Sharman, 57:17; Henry Wood, 1:01:36; Peter Nicolls, 1:03:23; Paul Vickers, 54:18; Julian Colman, 1:06:17; Will Smith, 1:04:48; Michael Lawson 1:00:40; Gerry Barton 1:06:45

Fenland Clarion Spring Road Race

West Suffolk Wheeler & Triathlon Club member Lee Sturman competed in the latest round of the Eastern Region Road Racing League on Sunday.

The Fenland Spring Road Race was held over 68 miles of open and wind swept roads around Sawtry in Cambridgeshire. Lee had another fine ride in a very competitive event, and will be pleased with his finish of 19th, 4’29” off the lead finishers.

Off Road Duathlon: Mud & Mayhem

Ray Reeves competed in the popular Mud & Mayhem off road duathlon in Thetford forest yesterday.

Held entirely over woodland trails and forest tracks, the event comprises of an 18km MTB race sandwiched between two 5km trail runs.

Ray finished 18th in his category, his total run/ride time being 1:39:14.

MTB: Rendlesham Forest MSG Round 1

Seven members of West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club raced in the first round of Mud Sweat & Gears Mountain bike series on Sunday. Held over a fast and largely flat course in Rendlesham Forest, but with enough technical challenges, including what was billed as the largest crater in the east region, to test bike handling skills.

Competing in the Youth Male category (Under 16), Robin Lines raced well to finish in 5th place.

In the Juvenile Male category (Under 14), both Sam Asker and Rhys Holland-Jones continued to build on their previous good form. Sam finished an excellent  3rd in only his third ever mountain bike race with  Rhys not too far behind in 5th.

Malcolm Borg found the change from his usual endurance events to shorter racing testing, but still finished 27th in the Sport Male category.

In the Open Male category, Dick Lines and Richard Holland-Jones both completed 3 laps. Dick finished in  62nd place with  Richard not too far behind in 70th.

Finally, Paul Watson produced another great performance to finish impressively in 7th in the Grand Vet Male category.
