Ixworth Crits Cycle Races
A superb day’s cycle racing was enjoyed by a bumper crowd at Ixworth cycle races on Bank Holiday Monday
Perfect weather brought out strong fields in all categories of races, and the racers certainly took full advantage of perfect cycling conditions.
The standard of racing across the board was very high and equally competitive; on a day of fast and sustained riding across the board stand out individual performances came in the final event of the day being the 1 hour + 5 laps Men’s Elite, 1st & 2nd Category and 1st & 2nd category Juniors where Steve Lampierre of Velosure-Giordana RT finished first in spectacular style having lead almost from the start, followed by Dean Shannon of Richardson trek RT.
Ahead of the final leg of the Women’s Tour of Britain finishing in Bury St. Edmunds on Sunday, Emma Trott (riding for Boels Dolmans) carved her way through the field in the Senior Women’s 40 minutes + 5 laps race to finish very strongly for 1st followed by Tanya Griffiths of Stanley primal Pro Cycling.
West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club members were also well represented, with the residents’ race being won in fine style by Kim Bonnelykke and Sam Asker continuing his fine run of form to finish well for 6th in the 25 minute Youth B Under 14 race

Great Notely Duathlon
Chris Hinitt and Phil Clarke, crossed over the boarder into Essex to take part in the Great Notley spring duathlon, the course was a 4k off road run followed by a 2 lap 20k bike route around the country roads and finishing with a repeat of the 4k run.
The race started in two waves of 70 competitors with both Chris and Phil staring in the second wave. After the first run and strong bikes, Chris was in 55 and Phil 35, with the temperature creeping up and the nasty little hill close to the finish draining the little bit left in the tank, chris held his position to finish 55th in Age Group and 98th overall setting a new PB by 2 mins and 9 seconds, with Phil putting in a faster 2nd run than first to finish 27th in Age group and 50th overall. A more than satisfactory season opener for both wheelers.
Look out for the Newmarket Triathlon on 18th May where both will be racing again along with a bit team of 11 other wheelers.
Cycling Time Trials - Superb Performances from Wheelers’ Ladies
Meanwhile, on a busy weekend for the club’s time trialists, there were stand out performances from Trish Goulden and Sarah Wells.
Continuing her recent good form, Trish rode in the VC Norwich cycling club’s 25 mile time trial on Sunday and posted an impressive 60:17 to finish 1st lady and 26th overall.
Riding her first open 10 mile time trial in the Cambridge Cycling Club’s 10 mile time trial at Cambourne on Saturday, Sarah posted a determined 23:58 for 4th lady.
Elsewhere, the club was well represented in the Kings Lynn Cycling Club’s 10 mile time trial. In a field of 74 riders, first Wheeler home was Richard Balaam in 25:47 (49th). He was followed by Mark Eastwood (26:22 and 57th), Mandy Bunn (27:26 for 62nd), John Steed (28: 26 and 67th) and Gerry Barton (28:51 and 70th).
