Silver Finish for Trish Goulden

Fresh from her previous weekend’s exploits at the Eastern Counties 10 mile time trial when she posted an impressive 22:35, West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon club member Trish Goulden made the long trip to Poole in Dorset for the National Women’s 50 mile time trial.

On a course of dual carriageways and smaller roads made difficult by rain and poor surfaces, Trish drew on her experience to produce a finely paced ride to finish the distance in 2:11:53 and 2nd in age category, 17th place overall.

Also on Saturday, club mates David young, Mark Eastwood and Gerry Barton rode in the Plomesgate CC 25 mile time trial. First Wheeler home was David Young, continuing his fine form, who placed 30th (1:10:11), followed by mark Eastwood (31st, 1:10:57) and Gerry Barton (35th, 1:17:36).

On Sunday, David Howes posted 25:42 in the Ely CC 10 mile TT.

Basildon Triathlon

Eight club juniors participated in the East Essex Kids Triathlon at Basildon Sporting Village on Saturday. Fortunately the forecasted deluge cleared early to make for a fine afternoon.

Jennifer Adam and Annalise Verzijl performed well in the Tristar 2 race (age 11 - 12) with Jennifer finishing 20th girl and Annalise 23rd girl. A sparkling first on the bike helped Charlie Knowler to finish 2nd boy and 2nd overall in a hotly contested Tristar 1 race (age 9 -10). Stu Adam, Tommy Verzijl and Jacob Taylor all put up super performances moving up to Tristar 1 this year, with Stu finishing 9th boy, Tommy 17th boy and Jacob, taking part in his first event, 31st boy. Hugo Thorneley and Thomas Curtis, also Tristar 1, both did well in their first triathlon, with Hugo overcoming bike racking problems to finish 21st boy and Thomas 24th boy.

Well done everyone!

Almost perfect weather masked the treacherous conditions under wheel which greeted riders at the 4th round of the Mud Sweat & Gears mountain bike race held at Ickworth Park on Sunday.

A tough and uncompromising course was worsened by a blanket of thick cloying mud in the wooded sections, which played havoc with riders and machines. Rising to the challenge were 7 West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club members. In the junior races, Rhys Holland-Jones (juvenile male) continues to improve finishing 8th in 1:09:43 (3 laps) with Robin Lines (youth male) finished 12th in 00:59:59 (2 laps).

For the seniors, ever present Paul Watson (grand vet male) had another eventful race to finish 7thin 1:39:22 (5 laps). In the same category, Malcolm McFarlane placed 16th in 1:29:11 (4 laps). A determined Ross McKenzie (junior male) finished well in 1:35:25 for 6th (4 laps).

Other results were Jamie Wightman (Master Male) 5th in 1:27:52 (5 laps); Malcolm Borg (sport male) 30th in 1:40:13 (4 laps)
