Esther reigns supreme in Kitzbuhel
WSW&T club member Esther Colman exceeded her own high standards at the European Triathlon Union’s European Championships held in the picturesque town of Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Tyrol on Sunday.
Competing in the female 18-19 Age Group Olympic Distance, Esther faced an open water swim of 1500m around the scenic Lake Swarzee, followed by a tough 39.4km bike section around hills surrounding the lake, and culminating in a 9.6km road race section.
Esther, having excelled in pre event competitions in the swim sections, her best discipline, stormed the 1500m swim in 0023:39. Her transition 1 time of 03:50 was followed by a bike time of 1:36:11 and t2 of 02:27. Her final run time of 49:32 gave an overall time of 2:55:37 and a very well deserved gold finish.
New Club Record
Trish Goulden again set new club and personal records with her marathon effort in the ECCA 100 mile time trial held on Sunday. With a start time of 5:17 am from Ugley, Trish’s time of 4:24:11 again capped a fine weekend for further Wheelers’ success in this discipline.
Brinkley Sets Standard
The second round of the Suffolk Cycle Race Series was held at Trinity Park, Ipswich on Wednesday with another fine turnout from West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club members.
Stand out performance of the night was easily that of Andrew Brinkley, who followed his previous week’s fine show with a race of controlled and confident riding.
Racing in the 4th category class on the 1m circuit, Brinkley looked comfortable in the large leading group of 4th category riders which started 1minute before the 3rd category group and the Elite/1/2 categories a further minute behind.
With the stronger 2 chasing groups gradually converging on Brinkley’s group with about 1.5 laps to go, Brinkley made his move with a strong attack from the front and quickly opened up a gap of 100m. A display of exceptional pace allowed him to maintain a strong grip on the race, eventually finishing some 15seconds ahead of the chasing group.
In the same group, club mate Paul Vickers also had a fine race to finish high up. Other Wheelers contesting mid field positions were Jeremy Waterstone, Richard Stiff, Matt Eaglen, Matt Denny and Steve Newman.
In the novice Go Race event, Dermot O’Riordan repeated his good previous week’s form and Richard Leeming rode well.
The U16 race saw Fabian Horrocks work hard to stay with the leading group throughout and Fraser Elsworth in the U14 raced well.
Junior Circuit Racing
The Wild tracks Karting Circuit near Newmarket hosted round 5 of the Eastern Region Circuit Series on Saturday. A fast flowing course saw West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon club members Oliver Griggs in fine form in the combined U10 and U8 race, finishing in 5th place just off the lead group. Harley Gregory also continues his fine form with 9th overall and 2nd U8.
Sam Asker had a strong ride to finish 4th in the U14 category.
Grass Track
Plomesgate CC near Ipswich was the venue for Sunday’s latest grass track race event. On a well prepared course and in ideal conditions Harley Gregory carried on from the previous day’s circuit race with an impressive ride for 1st U8 overall. Oliver Griggs also raced well for 7th overall U10.
In the senior race, Harley’s mum Nicole placed 3rd lady overall in only her second ever grass track race, with strong performances also coming from David Young and Jonathan Sjolin returning to the event after a gap of several years.

West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club member Julie Reeves took part in the Great East Swim of 2 miles at Alton Water on Saturday which she completed in 1:05:16 to finish 37th lady out of a mixed field of 273.
