Circuit Racing
Trinity Park Ipswich was the venue for more great racing in round 3 of the Maglia Rosso sponsored Suffolk Circuit Race Series, at which West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club was again well represented.
In the combined U14/U16 race Sam Asker rode well to finish 4th at under 14, with Fabian Horrocks also up close with the action. Making his racing debut was Felix Wilden who acquitted himself well.
Darren Baker returned to racing in the Go Race event for newcomers, joined by Graham Smith. Both Wheelers battled it between themselves out throughout the race, just off the back of the main group, with honours going to Graham.
Last week’s winner of the 4th category race, Andy Brinkley, was rewarded with an upgraded start in the 3rd category event.
Starting 1 minute behind the 4th cat riders, which included club mates Tom Smith, Jeremy Waterstone, Matt Denny, Steve Newman, Mark Dykes, Paul Vickers and ex Wheelers junior riders Alan Trolove and Will Malpuss-Smith, Brinkley’s group caught the 4th category group and was itself caught by the scratch group of 1st and 2nd category riders.
A crash on the final lap amongst the lead group lead to an inevitable sprint finish which saw a win for Strada Sport rider Stuart Pryce, Paul Vickers being the highest placed Wheeler in 8th.
Time Trialling
A torrential down pour failed to dampen the enthusiasm of David Howes or Tricia Goulden at the Veteran’s Time Trial Association’s National Championships 25 mile time trial held on Saturday.
Treacherous weather conditions meant the event was abandoned after about 60 riders had set off, but by then Tricia had recorded a magnificent 58:14 with David finishing in 1:01:15.
On Thursday the club hosted its 17.2 mile time trial from Brooks Corner on the A143. A blustery course faced the 21 Wheelers who took part, with Richard Farrow riding powerfully for the quickest time of the night in 43:37. Second was Darren Davis (44:05) with Julian Long 3rd in 44:26).
Other results;
Pip Moore (4th, 44:51); Thomas Gidney (U18, 5th, 45:58); Peter Golding (6th, 46:31); Stuart Grand (7th, 46:42); Matt Eaglen (8th, 47:42); Peter Stephenson-Wall (9th, 48:04); Peter Nicholls (10th, 48:20); David young (11th, 48:58); Viv Smith (12th, 49:03); David Howes (13th, 49:44); Malcolm MacFarlane (14th, 50;20); Steve Newman (15th, 50:24); Brian Alldis (16th, 50:37); Phil Clarke (17th, 50:53); Jim Greenwood (18th, 51:27); Darren Baker (19th, 51:40); Annie Drugan (20th, 54:09); Steve Bull (21st, 59:55).
Mountain Bike Racing
Radical Bikes, a purpose built off road cycling venue at Blackmore near Chelmsford, was the venue for round 5 of the Mud Sweat & Gears mountain bike series on Sunday.
West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club was again well represented with Robin Lines finishing a fine 9th in the youth category (4 laps, 1:21:18). Top placed rider was Jamie Wightman 5th in the Master Male race (7 laps, 1:53:37).
Malcolm Borg persevered to 26th in the Sport Male race (3 laps, 00:57:33), with Rhys Holland-Jones 13th in Juvenile Male (3 laps, 1:04:33) and in the Open Male race Garth Collier finished in 21st (4 laps, 1:15:20).
Sam Asker (Juvenile Male) crashed heavily and had to retire.
