Circuit Racing
The National Youth Circuit Championships took place at Hog Hill, East London on Sunday. Wheelers’ Sam Asker raced in the U14 category and his average speed of 22mph over the 25 miles of the race earned him a top 10 finish in his age category, and 32nd overall.
Time Trialling
Ron Back in fine Form
West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club members were again in action over the weekend at a number of open time trial events.
Stand out performance was the evergreen 73 year old Ron Back in the Eastern District Cycling Association’s 15 mile Open Time Trial hosted by Cycle Club Breckland on 2nd July. Ron posted an impressive 29:39 beating his veterans’ standard by a huge 9m 18 seconds.
Ron was back in action on Saturday at the Veterans’ Time Trial Association’s 25 mile event held on the E/2 course on a windy and drizzly A14. Ron posted 60:35, with club mates David Howes’s time of 59:55 and Tricia Goulden’s time of 58:01 both personal bests.
Saturday also saw the Norwich ABC 10 mile open Time Trial on the A143 between Wortwell and Bungay. A strong headwind on the return leg from Bungay faced Wheelers Jim Greenwood (26:32), Mark Eastwood (26:23) and John Steed (27:23), all of whom bettered their vet standards.
The club held the latest round of its Thursday evening time trials, West Stow being the course for the 10.1mile 2 up time trial.
Setting off at 2 minute intervals, teams of 2 (and 3 individuals) set off around the course. Fastest time was recorded by Andrew Brinkley & Dale Sturman in 22 mins. Other results (in finishing order) were:
Julian Long (individual, 23:54); Boyd Nicholas/Peter Golding 25:00; Peter Stephenson-Wall/Peter Nicols 25:33; Martin Gale/Pip Moore 25:47; David Young/Steve Newman 25:51; David Howes/Henry Wood 26:13; Phil Clarke/Mandy Bunn 26:38; Mark Eastwood/John Steed 26:56; Brian Aldiss 27:20; Jim Greenwood/Darren Baker 27:49; Stephen Williams/Steve Doe 28:47; Trevor Lloyd 28:32; Nic Whitwell/Dick Lines 28:52; Rhys Holland-Jones/Robin Lines (U18) 29:36; Neil Brinkley/Peter Brinkley 30:26.
Rounding off the weekend’s events, Victoria CC hosted round 2 of 4 of its time trial series on a course of 10.2 miles near Audley End House.
David Young, Mark Eastwood and Richard Ballam raced as 3 up posting a time of 26:47, with club mates John Steed and Jim Greenwood posting individual times of 28:49 and 27:57 respectively
Triathlon
Gosfield Lakes was the venue for the Gosfield Standard Distance triathlon on Sunday
Matt Shingleton was highest placed Wheeler in a combined time of 2:09:57 for 2nd in the Male 40+ category and 3rd overall.
Just behind Matt was Keith Marra in 2:11:38 for 5th overall and 3rd in the Male Senior category. Hannah McInroy Naylor’s time of 2:31:38 earned her 38th position overall and 2nd in her Female Senior category.
Not to be outdone, Charlie Knowler took part in the Upminster Junior Triathlon Tri Star 1 race (9-10years) on Saturday. A fine performance was rewarded with 2nd place.
On Sunday Charlie was back in action at the Eastern Region Aquathon held on open water at Fritton Lake, where he again performed well for 3rd overall in Tri Star 1.
New Suffolk Sportive
A new sportive in Suffolk is launching this August 30th and I thought that you might be interested to learn a little more.
The Crafted Classique forms part of Ipswich Cycling Weekend – a trio of two wheeled events including the finale of the British Cycling Elite Road Series - and aims to offer cyclists a truly unique experience in the heart of Suffolk. You can choose to take a 100mile or 100km route through Ipswich, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Leiston and Aldeburgh, among many other scenic towns and villages. It’s a challenging ride, with a total ascent of 876.64m and maximum elevation of 59.0m.
Before the Crafted Classique sportive begins you can enjoy a complimentary espresso and once you’ve taken on the challenge there will be a refreshing Adnams beer and delicious hog roast awaiting you.
This is a great challenge for a club to take on and I thought that you would be interested to sign-up your team. It would be wonderful to see you all there, and if you could perhaps share the event with your cycling community.
I have attached a press release for you for further information, but please do feel free to contact me with any queries. You can also sign up for the event here http://www.ipswichcyclingweekend.co.uk/.
We are also hosting a competition on our Facebook page where you can either enter as a group or individual for the chance of winning a framed, limited edition poster signed by a top elite cyclist along with two or five passes to the VIP area of the Ipswich Coastal Grand Prix – the finale of the British Cycling Elite Road Series - (number depends on if you enter as an individual or group). All you have to do to enter is post an image of yourself or team training for the event on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/craftedclassique/app_730719356989843.
The sportive is part of the Ipswich Cycling Weekend - a trio of two-wheeled events offering something for everyone. Across Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August, there is a brand new sportive challenge, a pro cycle race concluding the British Cycling Elite Road Race series, and the return of the Sky Ride offering cyclists and families the chance to ride traffic-free routes around the town.
I look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully seeing you at the start line.
