Top 2 Category Finishes for Wheelers Women
Whitlingham Great Broad in Norfolk was the venue for a weekend of triathlon events hosted by Norwich based Tri Anglia.
Opening the weekend was the Sprint Distance Triathlon on Saturday.
Consisting of a 750m open water swim around the broad, an 18km bike ride finished by a 5km run the event saw Rachel Compton continue to excel with an overall finish time of 1:23:11 earning her a well deserved 2nd in her age category, just 70 seconds off the leader, and 89th overall.
Sunday saw 3 Wheelers compete in the Olympic Distance event, consisting of a 1.5km swim, 38km bike ride and 10km run.
229 competitors braved the atrocious weather, with first time competitors over this gruelling distance Sharon Perry and Julian Colman racing well.
Sharon produced a big performance, her overall time of 2:31:03 was enough for 1st in her age category and 72nd overall. Julian’s overall time of 2:39:37 earned him a 10th –place age category finish and 117th overall.
Leading the way was Esther Colman, fresh from her recent European triumph in Austria. Her overall time of 2:28:23 produced another 1st age category finish (19 female) and 62nd overall.
Both events were very well received and thoroughly enjoyed by the Wheelers contingent.
Circuit Racing
Trinity Park in Ipswich was the venue for the Maglia Rosso sponsored full day’s closed circuit racing programme on Saturday.
Another good turnout from West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon Club saw some impressive performances on a windy and testing course.
In the combined U10/U8 Harley Gregory continued his good form with 1st in his U8 category; Oliver Griggs placed 3rd in the U10 group.
Making her debut was triathlete Mandy Bunn, who rode strongly in the women’s race against the more experienced circuit racers to finish 19th
Superb racing in the combined U14/U16 saw top 3 finishes for Fraser Elsworth (third in the U14) with Fabian Horrocks (1st) and Felix Wildey (2nd) in the U16s.
The 4th category senior men’s race saw Jeremy Waterson best placed Wheeler in 10th, followed by Matt Eaglen (15th) and Matt Denny (17th).
Jeremy raced again in the 3 /4 Men category, joined by 3rd category rider Andy Brinkley. Race pacing was hard. Despite Andy making huge efforts to break form the pack, and with Jeremy’s fatigue, neither were able to pull the leading pack in.
Go Tri Rougham Duathlon2
Friday evening took us back to Rougham Primary school for the second Duathlon of the series.
Word must be spreading, as we have seen ever increasing number of entrants for the GO Tri races.
Over all winner and new course record holder in a fast time of 22:42 was Keith Marra, with George Morris in 2nd and Darren Sharman 3rd all WSW members. It was also good to see so many novice entries and people having a go.
See the attached results sheet for all times.
