MTB XC REPORT: Thetford Winter Series Round 2

Jeremy Waterson was the club's sole* representative at Thetford Forest last Sunday for Round 2 of the Winter Series. In cold but dry conditions the course held up well in most places. Managing to avoid the plethora of punctures which afflicted many competitors on the so named "fire road of doom - flint city", Jeremy finished 65th out of 159 in the 2 hour race. This was despite starting around 2/3rds back from the front row and considering he came off once and had two chain suck incidents costing him around 10 hard earned places.

* Correction. Richard Emmerson (Team Flow/ West Suffolk Wheelers) finished 25th from the 148 strong field in the 2 hour vets race.

MTB: 5X3 series, Hautbois Outdoor Centre, Norfolk

There were four riders representing WSW&T in the third round of the new Norfolk based mountain bike series.  The course featured some tricky sections particularly following the rain which had made the muddy sections become super slippy.  Robin Lines finished 6th in the Under 16 race. In the Senior race, Barry Denny finished 12th followed by Matt Denny in 17th and Dick Lines in 19th.

This series is classified as “local” i.e. there are no race licence points awarded so the competition isn’t as serious as that found at most regional or national events.  The races are run in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere so are ideal for anyone who just wants to give mtb racing a go as well as more experienced racers who want a good workout. The next round is on 15th December at Tavenham Hall School, Nr Norwich.

MTB: Thetford Winter Series Round 1 – 4th November 2012

Richard Muchmore (Revel Outdoors), taking a break from cyclo-cross, rode in the 4 hour race on his trusty single speed.  After putting in two very decent laps the course began to cut up badly due to a large field of some 700 riders and the adverse weather conditions. From then on, he began to struggle as his legs became progressively colder due to being unable to turn the pedals at anything above about 5 rpm in the muddy conditions.  After three and half laps, sense finally prevailed and Richard returned to his car to thaw out and enjoy a well deserved cheese sandwich. For the record he finished   32nd (from 43) in the Veteran category.  In the 2 hour race, Richard Emmerson (Team Flow/West Suffolk Wheelers) finished 38th (from 160) in the veteran category.  A heavy cold caused the late withdrawal of Jeremy Waterstone.

Mountain Biking. Taverham, Nr Norwich. Fivebythree MTB Race Series Round 2. 21st October 2012.

Robin Lines

Three members competed in the mountain bike race at Taverham Hall School, nr Norwich. Robin Lines (pictured) making his mtb race debut finished an excellent 5th in the 45 minute youth race.

Later in the senior race, Dick Lines, also making his debut, finished a very creditable 33rd. Paul Barry (truanting from the Cyclo-Cross at Davy Down) finished 22nd.

The course Youth and Senior course was technically challenging (more so than the average CX course) with plenty of climbing, singletrack, roots, mud and swooping descends. The mud added to the technical demands and meant more effort was required to maintain momentum. There was a 'chicken run' to avoid the most technically challenging section but at the cost of a few seconds.

This is a great series particularly aimed at younger age categories and older riders new to mountain bike racing.
