Mud Sweat and Gears, Round 3, Thetford Forest

Thetford Forest, Sunday 13th June saw round 3 of Mud Sweat and Gears mountain bike series which also incorporated the regional championships. The weather was sunny and the course was in good condition despite the recent rain with only a couple of muddy sections which could easily be ridden around. The course consisted of a 4.7 miles long lap which was technical in places but with sections on the fire roads to recover and take on water and gels. Three West Suffolk Wheelers & Tri riders were in action with Darren Davis (Revel Outdoors) finishing 4th in the Veteran category, Jeremy Waterson 27th in the Sport category and Malcolm Borg 11th in the Master category.

The next local round is Round 5 Sunday 17th June, Ickworth Park. For full details of the series, click the link below. http://www.mudsweatgears.co.uk/

Mud sweat and gears round 1

Malcom Borg on Sunday raced in the Mud Sweat and Gears 1st round at Tunstall Forest near Ipswich. For those who have never ridden there the trials are flat and fast but very bumpy. The sun was out and having eaten  I was fuelled up and ready to go for the 2 0 clock start  but not before helping one rider set up his gears after his bike fell of his roof rack on the way to the race. We all lined up and listened to the obligatories from the head marshal and then it started. Given I ride a single speed nearly everyone flew past me down the fire road and for the next 2hrs6mins I cranked away until I had completed 5 laps or 25 miles. In the Masters category I was the fastest single speed rider but came 15th out of 15 as there is no single speed category but it was a good ride and next time I'll put a taller ratio on.

A well organised race

Mountain Bike Racing: Winter Series Round 4

There were several members of WSW & Tri club in action today at Thetford Forest contesting the final round of the Whyte Winter Series. A pleasantly warming sun gave almost perfect racing conditions. The atmosphere was superb. With each lap only being about 6 miles long it was a short but technically challenging course. The top guys managed to complete 6 laps in the 2 hour race. Member’s results:

2 Hour race: Jeremy Waterson 42nd (5 laps), Matthew Soame 70th (4 laps).

2 Hours Vets:  Richard Emmerson (WSW/Team flow) 31st, James Bidewell 103rd.

Male 4 hour Vets: Richard Muchmore (Revel Outdoors) must have either had a major problem on his second lap or there was a issue with the timings because it was recorded as having taken more than three hours. [Update 1: We have since discovered that it was the latter and there must have been a problem with Richard's timing chip and he, in fact, finished "8th or 9th".  Update 29/2/12: We are pleased to report that Richard's official time has been corrected and it is confirmed that he  completed 9 laps in 4  hours 7 minutes and finished 9th.]

With the Winter Series now over, the next challenge is the Mud, Sweat and Gears series, watch this space......
