'Cross: Snetterton Report

Fraser Elsworth 4th Snetterton (photo James Asker)The penultimate League meeting of the season took place at a new venue at The World Horse Welfare at Snetterton.

West Suffolk Wheelers and Tri were again very well represented on a surprisingly dry and technical course, which included grassy banks, tricky turns and an indoor arena section with jumps!!

In the vets race Mike Bowen rode well to gain third place, putting him in silver medal position in the league with Richard Muchmore fourth, and with one more score to count at our event in January still in contention for a League podium. Adrian Grimwood had his best ride so far this season despite coming to grief three times (!) finishing 30th, with Darren Baker gaining experience and coming home 40th.

'Cross: Broome Heath Scramble (Dec 16 2012)

For the first time in years the Broome Heath Scramble was not held in snowy conditions, the weather in fact being bright sunshine, and the course not muddy, being situated in a long-disused sand-pit at Ditchingham, near Bungay. The event was very well run by Iceni Velo and the course was the normal excellent mixture of grass land, single track and with two climbs, one in deep sand which necessitated a dismount.

First race, as ever, was the Vets, with Mike Bowen gridded on the front row, reflecting his second place in the League. A fast and furious pace was set by Andy Roberts (GWR) chased by league leader Phil Buick with our Mike riding strongly to secure an excellent third place. Further down the order Adrian Grimwood was mid-field when he punctured on some tree roots. This left Barry Denny and Darren Baker battling for tail end places, finishing 53rd and 54th respectively! Richard Muchmore unfortunately missed the action with a stomach bug.

'Cross: Mike Bowen finishes second at Redgrave

The eleventh round of the Eastern Cross League took place at Redgrave on Saturday and West Suffolk Wheelers & Tri Club were again well represented.

Mike Bowen kept up his excellent record in the Vets 45+ race. He was in a race-long battle with Iceni Velo’s Phil Buick but had to settle for second place just 11 seconds down, this leaving him in second place in the league to Buick, with three rounds remaining. Mike Lawson rode strongly on his mountain bike to finish 39th, just ahead of Adrian Grimwood (42nd) and Darren Baker (43rd).

In the under 12’s race our youngsters showed their continued improvement, and in an exciting battle claimed 3rd and 4th places, Sam Asker just getting the better of Fraser Elsworth on the final lap of the very demanding course. Showing equal enthusiasm were Matt Whitwell in 21st and Oliver Griggs in 26th out of over 40 starters and 5th and 8th respectively in the U10 section. Max Bidewell also competed but retired after a tumble.

West Suffolk were again third best team and have now moved up to 6th in the League.

Next Round Broome Heath, Near Beccles Dec 16
