Springfield Cross (Chelmsford). Eastern League Round 2. 16th September 2012.

Three young members made their cyclo-cross debuts in the Under 12 race.  Being their first race, they had to start at the back of the grid of 47 riders.  From the starting whistle, all three made rapid progress as they worked their way through the field avoiding several crashes in the process. The course was dry and fast but had several technical sections (including a tricky descent leading into a tight turn followed immediately by a sharp climb back up the embankment).  Fraser Elsworth finished 14th, Matthew Whitwell 22nd (5th Under-10) and Oliver Griggs 29th (9th Under-10). Brilliant performances all round especially for a first race and against a strong field of determined competitors.

In the earlier veteran race, Richard Muchmore and Mike Bowen battled at the head of the field, finishing an excellent 5th and 6th respectively.  Barry Denny and Paul Barry both finished towards the rear of the field.

John Swindells (Great Yarmouth CC) has taken some photographs and video of the races.

Cyclo-Cross: End of season Team Championships, 4th February 2012

This event was hosted by WSW & TC at King Edward VI.  On a bitterly cold morning, the course had a bit of everything frozen fast flowing sections, plenty of cornering and small tight technical sections.

In the main race, Alan Trolove (15th), taking time away from the boards, finished second Junior.  In the same race, the club was also represented by seniors Richard Stiff (20th) and Matthew Eaglen (26th).

Mike Bowen (3rd) polished off the season with another fine podium placing in the veterans race. Richard Muchmore (8th) was less than a minute behind.  Further down the field, Paul Barry just held off Adi Grimwood  in the battle for 34th place.  Graham Denny also braved the extreme conditions to complete his first ever Cyclo-Cross race. Overall, in the team championship, WSW & TC finished 6th out of the 12 scoring clubs.  The event itself was very well received by the Cyclo-Cross community and this was thanks to the wonderful support of many club volunteers who were involved in the organisation and turned out on the day in freezing conditions.
