Sun shines on the crossers at Davy Down

We drove all the way to Davy Down, right by the Lakeside Shopping Centre, in torrential rain and the return trip was made in even heavier rain, but for the duration of the racing the sun shone and a good time was had by all 17 West Suffolk riders and their supporters. As is now the norm we erected the Club Gazebo alongside the course and used it as a club HQ, from which to cheer on our representative riders in every race on the programme.

First up were the Under 10s, with Harley Gregory having another great ride to be first U8 and 10th overall, just ahead of Oliver Griggs 11th, Charlie Knowler 12th, Victoria Asker 13th and Grace Whitwell 19th. Her brother Matt finished 25th in the U12 event with Lianna Denny coming home 32nd after a dreadful start.

Mike Bowen wins at Hillyfields Cyclo-Cross

Mike Bowen had his first win of the season at the very muddy Hillyfields event in Colchester, organised by the AmisVelo club. The course was an excellent mixture of grassland and woods with a couple of short climbs and some very muddy adverse camber sections to test the skill and nerve of all the riders. Mike got the better of two close adversaries in the Vets Race and stormed home with 18 seconds to spare to reinforce his fourth place standing in the league.

Mike was one of 17 West Suffolk members taking part in the event, taking advantage of our gazebo to shelter from the inclemency between races and enjoying the camaraderie and slightly biased commentary !

Others in the vets race were Simon Elsworth 39th, Adrian Grimwood 41st, Barry Denny 46th and David Griggs 59th, with Ian Mortlock a non-starter. Matt Denny was our only finisher in the Senior race, gradually improving in 53rd, with Richard Stiff retiring with a last-lap puncture and James Asker scoring a DNF – “too muddy!”

Cyclo Cross Eastern League Week 4

We had a depleted entry in last week’s Cyclo Cross, as it clashed with our own Triathlon, but seven members did tackle the demanding course set out in the grounds of the Redbridge Cycle Circuit in Essex, the event glorying in the name of The Hoggenberg Cross, after the Koppenberg Forest stage in Flanders.

Oliver Griggs continued his good progress in the Under 10s with a best ever fourth place, Charlie Knowler debuting in 13th, with Grace Whitwell creditably 22nd. Her brother Matt rode well to achieve 11th in the Under 12 race, whilst Fraser Elsworth tacked the full circuit in the U16/U14 race, gaining more league points with a 33rd placing.

Cyclo Cross League Week Three

Week three saw a record number of West Suffolk contenders, with a total of 20 of us competing and we were represented in all the races!

The course was set out on the playing fields of the Baldock Sports Centre, with lots of long grassy straights punctuated with one pair of dismount boards and two steep banks, one rideable, one not ~ a course for the strong and fittest riders.

CycloCross League Week Two

The second event of the Eastern Cross League took place last Sunday (Sept 15) at Springfield, Chelmsford. West Suffolk riders were again out in force, although two (Richard Stiff and Simon Elsworth) didn’t get a ride as both the vets and senior races were over-subscribed at over 80 riders each.
