Cyclo Cross Season Starts Well

As a club we made a brilliant start to the CycloCross season last Sunday at the Essex Roads promoted event at Basildon Sport Village. To be honest it wasn’t the best organised meeting I’ve been to, but the brilliant turn-out and performance by our members made it a very memorable start to the season, with no less than 16 West Suffolk riders taking part across the age and ability range.

'Cross: Wheelers out in force at Basildon

As a club we made a brilliant start to the Cyclo-Cross season last Sunday at the Essex Roads promoted event at Basildon Sport Village. To be honest it wasn’t the best organised meeting I’ve been to, but the brilliant turn-out and performance by our members made it a very memorable start to the season, with no less than 16 West Suffolk riders taking part across the age and ability range.

First off was the Under 10 race with Oliver Griggs making up places as the race progressed to finish 9th, with Harley Gregory making a fine debut in 12th and second best U8, just ahead of Victoria Asker, who came through from a disastrous start to finish 13th

‘Cross: Under 12 Team Success. Mistley, 3rd February 2013

Colchester Rovers hosted the final event of the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League, the Team Championships.  It was an energy sapping course with thick mud making for heavy going and forcing frequent dismount/remounts as rear wheels struggled for grip on the uphill sections.

Undeterred by the conditions, the Under 12 Team consisting of Oliver Griggs, Matthew Whitwell, Fraser Elsworth and Sam Asker took second place, narrowly holding off Ashwell CC.  The young WSW & T riders did the club proud as they all gave 100% effort and they needed to as the second /third place team battle was decided by a handful of seconds. After the announcement of the results and collection of medals, there were several very happy young WSW&T riders.  The race consisting of 11 teams was won by Welwyn Wheelers.

‘Cross: A Winter Wonderland (Round 14)

Winter Wonderland: Alan Trolove 2nd Junior

I’m very pleased to report a great day’s sport that we promoted on Saturday (19th January) as the final leg of the Eastern Cross League at King Edward School.

First of all a big THANK YOU to all the members that put in such an effort to put this event on, when everyone expected us to give in to the weather and cancel it!

We had plenty of volunteers on Friday evening to make a start on course preparation, a great working party from 7.30am Saturday morning and a veritable army of marshals for the duration of the event, doing a great job and encouraging the riders, clearing up afterwards and a terrific crew offering catering all day and supplying some excellent cakes!
