MTB: Hadleigh Farm, MSG Round 8

Paul Watson 4th Hadleigh Farm, MSG Rnd 8The final round of the Mud Sweat & Gears Series was held at the mountain bike Olympic venue near Southend.  The full Olympic course was designed to test the best cross country mountain bike racers in the world so the organisers took steps to take out some parts of the course deemed too dangerous for regional level racers.  Nonetheless, it was still a very demanding circuit and not one for the faint hearted.

It was Paul Watson (4th Grand Vet Race) and Rhys Holland-Jones (4th Juvenile Race) who were the club's top finishers.  Also braving the course were Ross McKenzie (8th) and Robin Lines (10th) in the Youth Race. Malcolm Borg finished 12th in the Masters Race. Congratulations to all who raced at this iconic venue.

MTB: Podium finish for Rhys Holland-Jones

Rhys Holland-Jones 2nd MSG Round 6 Aug 2013

Rhys Holland-Jones took an impressive second place (Juvenile Classification) at round 6 of the Mud Sweat & Gears Mountain Bike Series at Hinchingbrooke Park in Huntingdon.

On a new bike and working together with club mate, Robin Lines (9th Youth Classification), Rhys achieved  his best ever performance and is the second WSW&T rider  to make the podium in the MSG Eastern Region Series  this season.  New member Ross McKenzie finished 8th in the Youth Classification of the same race.  All three young riders are making great progress this season.

The slightly cooler (than of late) and dry conditions were ideal for mountain bike racing (unless like some you prefer mud and rain!).  The course was flat and fast. The recent heat wave had hard baked the clay which made up about half the course producing a very fast surface.  In contrast there were a couple of long cut grass sections to slow and sap the strength of the riders.  The sections in the woods were a maze of tape arranged to test riders’ cornering skills to the maximum. There weren’t many technical features but the speed achievable on the faster sections rendered an element of danger to otherwise fairly straightforward features.

MTB: Secret Nuclear Bunker, MSG Round 5

The Secret Nuclear Bunker is still secret as far one popular satellite navigation system is concerned! Running a bit late to begin with, I arrived with just enough time to get my bike off the car, register and start a practice/reconnaissance lap.  I arrived back at the start just as the Grand Vets were being gridded so no time to go back to the car to replenish my drinks bottle ... less than ideal on such a hot day.
