'Cross: Mike Bowen finishes second at Redgrave
The eleventh round of the Eastern Cross League took place at Redgrave on Saturday and West Suffolk Wheelers & Tri Club were again well represented. Mike Bowen kept up his excellent record in the Vets 45+ race. He was in a race-long battle with Iceni Velo’s Phil Buick but had to settle for second place just 11 seconds down, this leaving him in second place in the league to Buick, with three rounds remaining. Mike Lawson rode strongly on his mountain bike to finish 39th, just ahead of Adrian Grimwood (42nd) and Darren Baker (43rd). In the under 12’s race our youngsters showed their continued improvement, and in an exciting battle claimed 3rd and 4th places, Sam Asker just getting the better of Fraser Elsworth on the final lap of the very demanding course. Showing equal enthusiasm were Matt Whitwell in 21st and Oliver Griggs in 26th out of over 40 starters and 5th and 8th respectively in the U10 section. Max Bidewell also competed but retired after a tumble. West Suffolk were again third best team and have now moved up to 6th in the League. 'Cross Report: It's a West Suffolk One/Two at Hempton! In a most memorable Cyclo Cross at Hempton, near Fakenham, Richard Muchmore scored another win in the 45+ Vets race last Sunday, chased home by fellow West Suffolk rider Mike Bowen. They had been locked in a race-long battle with league-leader Phil Buick and the lead changed several times, but with a big last lap effort Muchmore powered to victory. Held in bright weather the event featured a varied course of woodland, humps, bumps and a road section on which a formidable head-wind proved energy sapping. Further down the order in this race were other West Suffolk regulars, Adi Grimwood 38th, Paul Barry 41st and Barry Denny 44th ~ but ‘in the money’ as best over 60! The Under 12’s did us proud again, gaining in confidence each week, Fraser Elsworth getting his best result to date in 5th, Sam Asker 6th and Oliver Griggs 18th (7th in the U10 category). Richard Stiff continues to get improved results in the Seniors, this week coming home 34th, joined by Jeremy Waterson making his debut, and despite a couple of tumbles came home in 43rd. This week the team result was our best ever, joint second to the Norfolk Iceni Velo, raising us to 7th overall and still climbing. Next event is at Redgrave this Saturday November 24, first race 11am. Conditions could not have been more different to last year’s event, with the course very muddy and slippery all the way round and many tumbles and DNFs as a result. In the 45+ Vets event Richard Muchmore rode strongly to fourth with Mike Bowen also in the top 10, retaining his position as League Leader. Further down the field Adrian Grimwood, Darren Baker, Paul Barry and Barry Denny were scrapping for minor places, each suffering their own mishaps, and finishing 53rd, 54th, 56th and 60th respectively. The U12 race saw another good 7th for Fraser Elsworth, whilst Sam Asker crashed in the starting melee and took no further part. Matt Asker made a great debut in the U16 race in 38th out of 53 starters and 2oth in the U14s. We had two riders in the main Senior race, the last race on the programme by which time the course was a real mess. Richard Stiff came home 62nd with James Asker making a great debut finishing 68th out of 90 starters. This was a great team effort, which saw West Suffolk third in the club competition for the third event consecutively, bringing us up to eighth overall in the League, and with every chance of improving this by the end of the season. Next event at Hempton, Nr Fakenham next Sunday. Follow link for details: http://www.easterncross.org.uk/race12-13-10.htm Last Updated (Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:13) |
MTB: Thetford Winter Series Round 1 – 4th November 2012Richard Muchmore (Revel Outdoors), taking a break from cyclo-cross, rode in the 4 hour race on his trusty single speed. After putting in two very decent laps the course began to cut up badly due to a large field of some 700 riders and the adverse weather conditions. From then on, he began to struggle as his legs became progressively colder due to being unable to turn the pedals at anything above about 5 rpm in the muddy conditions. After three and half laps, sense finally prevailed and Richard returned to his car to thaw out and enjoy a well deserved cheese sandwich. For the record he finished 32nd (from 43) in the Veteran category. In the 2 hour race, Richard Emmerson (Team Flow/West Suffolk Wheelers) finished 38th (from 160) in the veteran category. A heavy cold caused the late withdrawal of Jeremy Waterstone. For those that don’t know we use four Watt Bikes loaned to us by Cycle Suffolk, which in addition to giving the riders lots of electronic feedback in respect of speed, power, cadence and much more, they are also linked to a computer display, so that we can race them, in the clubroom!
