Open water swim training resumes

On Saturday, 6 nervous swimmers tried their first Open Water Swim of the Season at Fritton Lake in preparation for the season and the Great Eastern on 16th June.

Leaving Ixworth at 07.05 in fair weather with a bit of sun on the journey down, arriving at the lake at 08.00.

The water was cold at 14.1º but everyone did their immersions slowly and adjusted to the water temperature during the swim.  The temperature did not put our two novices off who did 2 and 2.5 miles respectively.  One 3 miler and a 3.5 miler with a 5k run, and two 1 milers.

We enjoyed our usual celebratory coffee and buns picnicking by the lake side watching the swimmers enter and depart the water feeling very chuffed with our initial positive sortie. We arrived back at Ixworth at 12.00 noon, job accomplished.  We have one designated swim at Fritton before June 16th but are contemplating another one on Saturday 1st June.

Triathlon England Eastern Region League

2012 is our club’s third season in triathlon and I think it’s time we really put the Wheelers well and truly on the Eastern Region map as competitors.  With that in mind I have collated all the races that make up the league for this season below along with the number of places left and the cost of each race.  Each event hyperlinks to the entry page on-line.  See below for details on how the league works.

Super Sprint Series

Tomorrow's instalment for the Super Sprint Series is a non-competitive run starting at the Club Room in Shakers Lane at 18:45.  The distance will be a 5k loop finishing back at the club room and pace will be dependent on who turns up.  If necessary we'll split the group dependant on ability and for those that wish to I am happy to do a second loop!

Look forward to seeing lots of eager wheelers tomorrow....

Junior Triathlon League gets underway

Saturday saw the start of the 2012 Eastern Region Junior Triathlon League with the Basildon Aquathlon. WSW & Tri junior Niamh Perry was in her first ever race against a competitive field of far more experienced triathletes. Perry was the only Wheelers athlete taking part, but did herself and the Club proud finishing in 5th place out of a total of 17 girls in her age group. A fantastic performance, especially so considering it was her maiden outing in multisport racing.

Next week Johan Hasselder will be competing in the Tri-Sport Epping Aquathlon, but the junior tri season really gets underway on 20th May with the St Felix Junior Triathlon in Southwold. WSW & Tri Club will have NINE junior athletes competing then with representation across every age group.
